Anyone able to find a price? I'm wondering if that is a proprietary rack or something off the shelf from another car. The mount is pretty straight forward. _________________ 71 LWB Manx style dunebuggy

I bought a Polo rack off German Ebay. Total cost including shipping was $130. I'm currently welding the mount and modifying my steering column. I also had to buy the rack clamps and tie rod clamp from a german parts store. (I had no luck trying to buy the clamps from UK used parts stores) _________________ 1970 Beetle - Rally car

Someone asked about R&P from another vehicle. In another forum I read R&P's from J-body GM's work well for our application. |

I just finished running a rally in Missouri, so I now have the energy to post some photos. I'm working on a blog post, so look for them in a few days. _________________ 1970 Beetle - Rally car

Yes, that actually is nearly the same R&P housing....I think.... that went into the rabbit/golf mk-1 in the mid 70's to about 1982-83 I think.
In that car it was 3.2 turns lock to lock. Of course rhat will also matter what length teh steering knuckle attachment points are. The longer the knuckles...the shorter teh turn # lock to lock. With beetle style steering knuckles...2.0 to 2.5 turns sounds about right.
The unfortunate issue is that not very many manual racked vehicles survive in this country...so replacement parts are actually not cheap if you can find a rebuilt rack.
Right now, Rockauto has remans from $153 to $241 outright. Ray |

I don't think it's the same thing. The Golf Mk1 was larger. The Polo was smaller and the rack mounted to the firewall.

I've got a 1.5:1 quickener and get 2 turns lock to lock.

I bought it new from a german guy for $70 on ebay. Not a reman. _________________ 1970 Beetle - Rally car

Cool....but you should check out the mark 1 rack anyway if you have time. It should be able to be used readily after removing the mount ears if you don't need them. Its another option.
Also bear in mind.....1.5 turns is nifty for working in the sand. But that will literally kill someone on the street. Those who are building street vehicles would be insane to run less than 2.0 turns lock to lock. Ray |

Mine is NOT 1.5 turns. It's got a 1.5:1 ratio quickener attached to the steering column which makes it 2 turns lock to lock. And no it's not dangerous on the street.
I still can't see how a Mk1 Golf rack would work. Isn't it too wide? The polo rack is end load, which keeps the tie rods in the middle for better geometry and reduced bump steer. The Mk1 rack would require really short tie rods. _________________ 1970 Beetle - Rally car

I broke my rack at the last rally. I ran off road, flew over a culvert sideways, took out about 3 or 4 saplings and hit a tree stump with my right front wheel.
I bought a used rack off of the German Ebay.
