Thanks for the heat spreader term DAIZEE..
Apparently those perforated toaster grills peacefulwarrior posted are also known as a simmer plate, heat spreader, or trivet, its not for making toast <g>. Its for simmering stew, especially on an electric burner..
But if you want one, there is one on this page for less than $5, with a folding handle (7th image down the page).. same perforated 2 layer heat spreader..

hahahaha that was the only word I could think of. Your description is correct. No they are not made for toasting but apparently they do a fine job on even more than just toast. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

<<They were a fad many years ago, it was said that they redistributed heat more evenly over the bottom of the pot so that you didn't need to use such high settings. >>
I don't think the pot heat duffuser was a fad--it's a fsct of life for building a good stew, spagetti sauce without burning the product on the bottom of the cooking vessel.
I still use my grandmother's gizmo here at home to keep from scortching the tomato's on the bottom of the pot-I cook spagetti sauce all day--for at least 8 hours.
The gizmo works great.
I would have never thought it was a toast maker-- _________________ T.K. |

Oh no it wasn't made for toast, some people have just gotten creative. It probably makes yummy hot sandwiches too. I got mine and originally used it for stove top use but stopped using it for some reason or other. So that probably makes me your grandmother's age. If I still have mine it will go in Scooby and I'll try the sandwiches route.
Do you make a BIG pot of spaghetti sauce and stew? YUM YUM _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Yep--
One hellava beef stew, knock ya out Spagetti sause, and drop dead Chicken Paprikash.
Ya have to cook this stuff so it don't get that bottom of the 10 quart pot to burn.
That stove top gizmo makes it all happen here in my kitchen.
I've said many times I've heard a bunch of off the wall stuff here--the making toast on the Westfalia's gas oven with a burner difusser is way up on top of my list--
And if it works ---it's actually one hell of an idea.
Who thought this one up anyway??
It had to start somewhere--- _________________ T.K. |

and for those to frugal to buy a toast device that could lead to world enslavement i present mine. Not only is it practically free its a perfect way for the proletariat to thumb their noses at the bourgeois westy crowd. its called a piece of tin foil on the top left rear of your engine. Yes, with a trip to the spray-n-wash and a little creativity you too can move far beyond toast and public approval with your wbx cook top 2100. Perfect for tailgating or meals on the go. |

I bought those from Frank but have not tried making toast or bagels on them yet,
just coffee!
How about showing us a nice pic of that VW toast?
The walmart camp toaster works pretty good but I find that you need four of something on it, or it will not toast evenly.
Seems that it doesn't work very good outside with some wind, but no wind and you have got some toast! |
Well I finally got around to try the VW toast from my grill guards.
Not going well! I tried a bagel and it only burned as the flame was too much for it.
Then I tried just heating them up and putting a bagel on one and pushing it down, this seems to work a little.
The problem then is the bagel stuck to the metal and I had to pry it off with a toothpick.
I guess it could be done but wouldn't a branding iron like the one VW is selling work better?

those perforated toaster grills peacefulwarrior posted are also used to ...Bake on the stove top. Such as brownies or cakes.
We were invited to a local womans house for lunch while down in ''Punta Cabras'' Baja. She made us Chile Relanos, Enchiladas, Rice and Beans and for desert she had a German chocolate cake she baked on the stove with this flame spreader. Tasted as good as in the oven.
She gave us one to bring home with us so we use it while camping also.

This is a multi-purpose cooking tool that toasts bread much better and faster than the infamous Coleman gizmo.
With a cook-top grill like this you are not too limited on the size of bread you want to toast. It folds up compactly and comes with its own case.

Derailing this thread even further from toast, I have to say that all my GSI made stuff has been good. My favorite is the aluminum Dutch Oven. The 10"one has no legs and will fit inside the 12"one (that has legs). We had both on a 15 day Alaskan Kayak trip. We used the big one essentially as a pot for stews, the smaller one as an oven to bake something every evening. Now we have Dutch Oven cook-offs that last 3 years with our friends when (car) camping - which my wife wins every time.
In the Westy, you could carry a couple of cast-iron dutch ovens, but if you haven't done an engine conversion, I highly recommend the aluminum ones _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

GoWesty is no offering a new, fancy Dixon toaster from New Zealand:
http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=23345
Anybody ever use one of these?
Seems pricey, but I am oh-so-serious about my cinnamon raisin toast w/PB in the morning. Perhaps I may splurge. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

Since this brought back up, I'll update this post:

Edit: Okay, I totally forgot. Old Blue came with that exact toaster! When I cleaned out the van back in February, I took that thing out of the sink cabinet and tossed it into a box, not knowing what the heck it was. It's disgustingly dirty; now that I know what it is, I'll clean it up and put it back in the van! |
I've used the http://www.camp-a-toaster.com/index.html a lot since ^that post. It works quite well... actually, it works better than the so-called toaster oven in my house! _________________ ~Kamz

FWIW - since the subject came up in another thread:
http://www.gsioutdoors.com/products/pdp/glacier_stainless_toaster/camp_cookware
Only $10, stainless, makes good even toast (screen acts as flame spreader),
folds absolutely flat, quick (~1 min) although only one slice at a time...
----------------
FWIW - much better than this:

This little gaget left me stunned, it worked so well. One piece, one side at a time, but really fast and even.

I have this too. Perfect size, works great, folds down to small, flat, easily stowed little package. Perfect for Westy! |
