The same rear hatch panel fits 1964 - 1975 Buses and on '68 - '70 westy seems to have a V notch in them for a knob to open the hatch from the inside.
But what about '64 - '67 Westy Buses...did they all have the same V notch or not?

Thanks guys, it helps in nailing down the year range for my new products!
Hey Major and crofty....does that knob pull out or slides up or what to open the hatch?
I think it is a 5mm threaded knob on a shaft?
I think my billet alum dash knob with a long set screw might work for it. _________________ Werksberg Products....Products that work!

I've never seen that knob. To me it looks like it is a lock from the inside. The cam rotates down to block the u-lever from intruding? When the outside is locked you can still open the u-lever from inside. The ones with a hole in them are '66 and newer, I think. VW suggested putting a wire loop and stem into that hole on a regular hatch to open it from the inside. |

yes it is meant to be an inside lock.
that way when you are camping you do not have to lock the hatch with the key from the outside. you just close the hatch and slide that lever to block the opening mechanism, in the morning you can just slide the lever the other way and pull the latch assembly from the inside and open the hatch. _________________ OGJHC

I'm starting to get little wafts of bus stink coming from the north. Something about the unique scent of drivers seat padding when it's glued together with mouse piss and shit that really gets me going... and I'm smelling it! Oh yeah! Time to start loading up the equipment. |

Those are baywindow locks. I don't remember seeing a split with the knob. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Matt, does that knob unscrew at all? Or is it a fixed? I think the '70 Westy I looked at the owner said it screws in but what about the early ones?
Crofty, the early ones...what did they use to open the latch then?
Thank you to everyone that has posted. It helps to understand these old vehicles by sharing information!

You pull the catch with your finger. They lock, at least on a Westy, with a brass slider. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

What size shaft as I make the billet knobs for the radio (non threaded) and like my seat knobs...I could drill and tap for a set screw on the side. _________________ Werksberg Products....Products that work!

I was just wonder what the shaft size was so if someone else wanted them....I could make a small run of them. _________________ Werksberg Products....Products that work!
