Bummed that it was a non stop rainy weekend and I couln't replace my expansion tank.
Even with the rain I was able to get some inprovements completed.
Installed my newly aquired West Marine cig socket on the side of the stove/fridge.
Also was able to do some more sound deadening between rain drops.
Anyone looking to remove the right back panels in a Westy for sound deadening.
Will realize that the bug screen snaps are riveted in and not screwed in.
I didn't drill the out the snapsbut gingerly pried the panels as not to snap them while leaving the snaps alone.
Not fun but I completed the job and the Tin Can sounds are going away. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

two things done.
first, a year ago I replaced all Westy water lines for the water tank, sink and hookup. The short piece of water hose inside the tank for the pump was a bit short leaving the pump hanging a bit instead of resting at the bottom of the tank so every time I brake, the pump would swing and knock on the side of the tank like a pendulum, pretty annoying sound, so today I replaced that section of hose with a longer one.
second, I finally finished my upper bed extension/pillow. A must if you are tall and don't fit in the upper bed. Materials: marine quality plywood, mattress foam, gray vinyl, contact cement, gray fabric, HD Velcro, staple gun, needle and thread. Pics below
almost finished sewing Velcro
adding HD felt pads to board points of contact with van upper siderails
this is how the bed extension travels in the van

With a good deal of help (and borrowed tools) from friends, pulled the engine out of Brunhilde yesterday to start the process of replacing head gaskets, water pump, thermostat, distributor, belts, plugs and wires, hoses, etc. Went pretty smoothly - nothing and nobody got broken in the process. Well, I did crack a 13mm socket, but it was a crappy one anyway. And so it begins ...

finished installing the sliding window today:
plus some small tweaks on the interior and minor paintwork in the rear.
also took the van for a spin and snapped a few picturs, even though the car is missing a few bits and pieces (rear bumper trim among others).

I guess posting this sort of thing can be considered "less than smart", or self-defeating, but Canadian Tire has a $25 Car Safe that I picked up a while back on sale for $15 or so. Today, I attached it in a fairly "secret" location. No doubt any Westy owner will recognize the location from the following pics. It's not very big but can probably conceal a smallish camera, GPS etc.
You can attach the sleeve with up to 6 bolts. turning the key releases the safe, and you can take it with you still locked.
I realize there's lots of places to hide stuff in a Westy, but one more won't hurt
I mounted it low enough on the partition so that the key can be left in it if needed.
Where is it?
There it is... |

Nice! I put a piece of carpet over this particular panel just for the reason that there's a hole in it. Don't want to give away all the secrets of the Westy? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Changed my belts. Thought it would be hard, but it was easy. Just needed the right tools. Breaker bar and long ratchet really helped. _________________ '89 Vanagon GL "Whitestar" Wolfsburg edition. 4-speed, 2.1L

Cleaned up the Westy post-trip. I cannot begin to describe the bug mess on the van. Took quite a bit to get the bugs off the windshield rubber and what gets jammed under the luggage rack seal. Blerf. It isn't show-detailed but it is clean enough to keep me from wincing while in the garage.
Bugs or no, ultimately I can't complain about 3,310 trouble free miles in 8 days. _________________ Julia

Any vacation pics to share?
Glad you had a trouble free expirence with your Westy. |
Thanks Timwhy! Westy/Vanagon drivers don't trumpet the trouble-free here half enough. I get that this is a triage and knowledge sharing site, but still...
Sadly, we didn't take many pictures. It was an a haul from Minnesota to Florida (with a round-about-way in Georgia and a few days in St. Augustine) and back. The time off the road was spent in the water or basically just relaxing with old friends. The Vanagon performed flawlessly, even though the Air Conditioning didn't But we knew that going into the drive.
I'd recommend Florida's Anastasia State Park to anyone who likes even waves and a shaded spot. I wouldn't recommend it to the people who like consistent temps or have a dislike of bugs. Lots of... bugs. Florida bugs. Wow. Nice place, though. _________________ Julia

If you read some threads on the water pumps, you may be able to revive yours.
There is a small piece at the bottom of the pump that sticks in place, if you give it a few turns?
I guess clockwise?
It just may come back to life with some power. I read the thread after my old one was already on it's way to the landfill.
Never got a chance to try it out.
Good luck...............Tim _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

ATTEMPTED:
1) Bleed front brake lines...still no go. (I've been soaking the bleed screws in Kroil almost daily for 2 weeks...)
QUESTION: How rounded over is too rounded over? I've almost worn out my vise-grips. Assuming they come loose eventually, Will I be able to replace the bleed screws or will I have to spring for all new calipers?
2) Fix windshield washers...still no go. (removed & tested; pump is good...) Now how to clear the plastic lines??? Uff da, I can't even see where they go up there!
QUESTION: DO I have to take off the dash for this? Help...
COMPLETED:
My first van oil change! (after much research, went with Brad Penn 20W-50 + 4 oz. Marvels; Mahle filter & nylon drain plug washer) All good now!
Next chapter: fuel lines & gas tank seals. The saga continues... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Finished up the "refrigerator door into the rear closet" mod. Routed out a groove to install the T-molding, glued it in, aligned and screwed in the hinges, and I've now got a large closet access that looks like it came from Westfalia that way.
Pictures and more detailed write up to follow. _________________ '85 Westy |

I woke Horst up from a 1 1/2 year slumber back in February.
Other than a new battery, fresh gas, an oil change and a couple
of fuel filters, nothing till today. Plus 4 205/70/r14 tires.
Yes they are p-metric, but with what I carry they're sufficient.
On Monday my Temp 2 sensor, pedal pads, heater levers, and
tail pipe gasket came in.
Well I put the heater levers and pedal pads on at lunch ...
and went to the store for some smokes.
What Horst did to me at lunch....
his odometer quit at 203,802. .
Oh well at least it wasn't the speedo! _________________ 84 Vanagon GL van "Horst"
