This.
The small flathead screws that hold my burners to my stove plate are unfortunately very very content where they are so I'm not sure I'll be able to do this mod anyway :-/ _________________

OK, here's a few shots
Overview of the whole thing.
The ignitors installed. Unfortunately the base of the ignitors is not SS, so they get a bit rusty. Still works fine, though. I didn't have to take the burners out to do this; I just opened the face plate and carefully drilled where there were no gas lines. It was pretty straightforward. The wires underneath are routed away from anything that might get hot, but it's not a huge concern, as they seem to be made of something reasonably heat-resistant.
The button. It doesn't get in the way here, and I've never accidentally triggered it. Not that that would be a catastrophe, though.
This mod was worth every penny and more. Highly recommended.

That looks nice!
What about putting the small (rusty) mounting plate underneath the stove top and then get a stainless screw that would be visible from the top? Do you think there would be enough room to sneak the ignitor tip up through from the bottom?
I'm stoked that the burners don't have to come off to make this happen wooo WOOOO!!!!

Yeah, that's a really good idea. Where were you two years ago?
The kit requires bending and trimming the ignitors to length, so reach shouldn't be a problem. The one thing that requires experimenting with that install method is if the electrode ends up too close to the stove base, and arcs to it around the insulator instead of the burner cap. You'd have to work that out empirically, though.
I'd use an SS nut and bolt if I did it that way, with a dab of RTV sealant around everything. It'd be a titchy operation to to this within the confines of the stovetop, but very possible.

Just finished mine, I put the electrode in a slightly different spot. This way I didn't have to drill into the stainless plate.
Works great!

Nice work, Presslab!
I assume you took the burners off to mount the ignitors there?

Thanks! I appreciate your long-term feedback as well, just what I needed to motivate me.
Yes I took the burners off; luckily my screws came right out. I drilled one hole in the aluminum top piece, and another hole in the aluminum piece below the stainless. The stainless is oval shaped there so I didn't need to drill it.
My ground wire is attached to one of the screws that hold the shaft on, not the best place but it seems to work.
I also put some teflon grease in the valves, they are much smoother now. Teflon or moly lube is better here because of the galling of brass on brass. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

I just did this very same mod as a part of the stove front re-do, it was getting really rusty. I gotta say of all the stuff I've done to the van this is perhaps my favorite. If you use the stove-top with any regularity not having to look for a lighter first thing in the morning (coffee is essential) while the wife and boy are asleep. The only difference compared to above is I used a non battery version. It usually lights on the first or second try.

Getting ready for this mod. Quick question it looks like the battery powered one has two igniters, but the push button one only has one? |

I did something very similar to Houuak. I also like press labs position of the ignitor eelectode. My system uses two piezo lighters from the old domestic refrigerators.
Two ignitor electrodes, two push buttons and holes for electrodes drilled into stainless to stove top. Using the Domestics eliminates then need for batteries
an separate ground wires. One of my favorite mods. |

Forgot to mention that the ignitor system offered at my local hardware store
(for B BQ) comes with two electrodes. Down side is that they have to be grounded. The dometic doesn't. |

Cool pretty easy, I put my holes at 10 aclock for the left and 2 aclock for the right so that they would match. It would have been easier to have both burners at 10. As you cab see in the pictures the right side was a little tight.

I just added the ignitors at the link below to my stove and I love it. Both burners easily light on the first press of the button. The ignitors are powered by a AA battery so it's an easy press of a button, not the more violent mechanical piezos found on many bbqs, etc.

I recommend this mod. _________________ - Jim

This is cool.
My stove is apart for servicing - I will be adding spark igniters.
I wonder how long the AA battery lasts in the electric igniters.
Probably long enough to forget there's a battery in it (if it ever quits working).
I like the idea of the silent spark when I have guests upstairs.
Will be nice to eliminate the:
drawer open
fish around for igniter
spark
toss
slam!
...for each burner light, and re-light if it goes out at simmer etc.
If you think about it that's a lot of wear and tear on the drawer.
And if it latches each time....
Looking fwd to it. _________________

Hmmm, I just checked my AA battery and it's the same cheapo that came in the package from amazon so 3 1/2 years and counting. I much prefer the soft touch of the batt. Piezo compared to creating the energy through a bang with the mechanical piezo.
As for never looking for matches or a lighter again? You're going to wonder why you didn't do this 10 years ago.
Enjoy!
Also, I painted the button housing (and touched up the white on the knobs) when I refinished the stove front and it really tied it all together...

I just put a lighter in the storage tray above the galley as soon as we get to camp. We need it for the campfire etc. anyway do it’s good to keep handy. Yet another project I saved myself from! _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

Ahmed is being a troublemaker here....
Cleanest sparker install is up off the floor
--- but I wouldn't say "cool pretty easy."
not at the moment with two broken screws.
...But i intend to prevail.
It's going to be "years" before I save the time wasted by fishing around for a lighter.
But know I'm gonna enjoy the pushbutton sparker.
I like the coffee ritual in the morning, this will be a satisfying part.
Ahmed used this kit ^^ above: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Push-Button-Igniter-Kit-660-0001/206338741
They give you two different sparkplugs, you cut the longer one to equal the short one.
I'm using this kit from Amazon with the nuts.

dlb154 I'm wrestling with this right now.

I finally decided to give this mod a shot and ordered my parts... I'm going with a remote switch that connects to the electronic ignitor. The plan is to mount the ignitor in an easy to access area for battery changes while putting the switch on the stove panel face for ease of use...
|
The battery is very easily accessible.
The button looks big & clunky because its the "battery cover",
it screws off and the battery is right there under it.
Alternately you could rewire a more attractive momentary switch, and place the igniter somewhere accessible, such as back behind the drawer
The electrode wires are long enough to put the igniter wherever you want.
As jimf909 wrote, his is still sparking after 3 1/2 years on the original battery.
=====================
I took my stove all apart.
Broken screws etc, you can see it next to the (9/32) drillbit.
SCM's suggestion of retreating to the old familiar "lighter rigamarole",
but use the upper shelf....
sounds pretty good right now as there's no possible way to recoup the time spent disassembling my burners.
Hopefully the "satisfaction" of the button mitigates that issue.
But there's light at the end of the tunnel.
For those who have NOT yet disassembled your stove......STOP !!
Only remove the stove faceplate.
I'm right in the middle of this, and way too far disassembled.
Here's what Ahmed wrote:

Then he showed pics going down the rabbit hole.
I think he's saying that it can be done WITHOUT going down the rabbit hole,
by just drilling thru at "10 o'clock" location on both.
Here's a pic to explain the proposal.
My current thought is that the presslab / ahmed.aboudan electrode placement can be done in minutes, only removing the front stove faceplate.
1) Grind/split the threaded sleeve or any metal parts off, leaving just the cylindrical white ceramic insulator.
2) Drill the burner casting from above, passing thru the SS cutout (not touching SS) and continue thru the steel mounting below. (Ahmed cut this corner off)
3) Squirt some silicone in the burner housing hole, then insert the wire and electrode from above, coated in silicone RTV, to hold the electrode in-place.
And seal the insulator/hole area.
4) The wire connector will easily fit thru the 9/32 hole. You might want to stuff most of the wire thru THEN squirt the RTV into the burner housing. Then easily fish the messy wires out and connect to the igniter.
Perhaps try to dab some RTV on the bottom. _________________
