I have searched the photo gallery with no luck. On my trunk hinges the spring sits in a slot on the hinge like all of them, however unlike the engine cover hinges there is nothing to retain the springs in the grooves. As a result if the trunk lid is raised too high or slips out of your hand and goes up on it's own, the springs disengage from the lid and the lid comes crashing down.

I have looked at the ones on the engine cover and they are secured to the hinge by a machine screw through the hinge. There are no holes in the trunk hinges to do something similar.

Does anyone have any pics of what was used to prevent this, or is it a feature of all Ghias?

Hi Dan,
AFAIK the same retaining method applies to the trunk hinges. A small staple like strip of metal is wrapped around the spring tip and plate cup to prevent the spring falling out in the manner as described.

I'm in the same boat as mine are lost too. I will have to improvise a replica for this. It can be a really annoying every time the hinge falls out.

That concept would work but there is nothing to secure the strip to, and there are no holes to secure anything else. I am beginning to wonder if there ever was a spring retainer.

Dan,
On my '71, I added a 3/8" x 2" bolt and lock nut, in the corner of the hinge, under the pivot point. There was a hole already there, don't know if factory or PO. The lemgth allows the end to hit the hinge mounting bracket and acts as a stop. It is barely visible. I can take a picture tommorow if you want.

Hope this works. You can barely see thethreaded end of the bolt I usedfor a stop.

Here's a close up of the trunk lid hinge showing the original stop on an un-restored '70 Ghia. The bolt is actually a thick headed screw, almost like an engine tin screw, but with a slightly rounded head. There is one on each side. I also attached a photo of the engine cover hinge with the metal strap retainer like Nicholas described.
