I wanted to say thanks for everyone's input ,insight and humor over the last 5.5 years. I sold my Westy, it was a tough decision & I am already freaking out.
Not that i wont buy another one, maybe a syncro, just not right away. I'll be lurking here now and again. Stay cool everyone.
Peace
Dave |

Raynor,
I always thought you had the best Samba username! I always chuckled when I saw a post from you. You will be missed, but I hope you are at peace with your decision.

Too bad....
You put a lot into that van.
Recaro's, burley a-arms, rear discs, norcold, the svx motor...
All the stuff my van wants me to add on. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

your not the first ive heard thinking/actually selling their van.
the guy who got me into these vans is talking about selling his, and because he is tired of things breaking down on it. he drives his westy for 1 reason and 1 reason only, because he is an extreme backpacker and its his home away from home (goes on 10K miles road trips in 50-60 days)
it is the main reason i always downplay the vanagon when someone talks about buying one - they are very old and only getting older, so the amount of maintnence is constantly increasing, unless you do a frame up which ive only see a few over the last few years (2-3 true frame ups) - i came close to a mechanical frame up - spend 8K on new parts and still there is soo much that could be replaced.....
not to mention it could have used a whole underbody sanding and re-applying of bottom coating....
now that being said, hopefully you do find another van and get back into them. a few of my college buddies want me to build them one - and i agreed but only after i told them i would completely rebuilding all mechanical systems (which with they fully agreed based on the age of the vehicle)
i also hope to buy one soon, but cannot afford the excess $20K in my budget which i feel is necessary to make the vans roadsafe for decades to come, but again....this is my opinion....
whatever you do, just dont buy a new volkswagen....dam things are made out of plastic............and always seem to smell like crayons... _________________ I do Subaru conversions - Front End work - Mechanical systems repair - PM for Details |

oh I think the OP was quite a positive Vanagon owner. He did not give his reasons for selling and if it was negative van related, I think he would have said. I'm suggesting that he had personal reasons to sell and that he is sad about it.

That's sad to hear, and had to be a really tough decision to make. I've had Brunhilde for less than a year, and within the next few weeks I'll have already put as much in parts into her as I paid for her, but I already cannot imagine NOT having my van.

It's heartwrenching, but sometimes a necessity. I need to sell my suby 90 gl to fund the 89 gl. I'll be lucky to get parts monmey out of it, but the new project is so exciting I'm just goin for it. I wake up every morning and reinvent myself.

You didn't ask for any advice but you may know me enough by now that I'm going to give some. The best thing you can do to get a good price is clean, clean, clean EVERYTHING. And of course hopefully it is in good visual and mechanical condition. Make a DETAILED list of all that it has to offer and hopefully you have a history file. I know you didn't ask and I'm sure you are sad but you are moving onto something else. I did it and I'm soooooo glad I did. Good Luck. To those who can't move on yet, you will, the only treatment for Vanagonitis is a Vanagon some day when it is right for you
I know someone with a suby and he'd prefer the AAZ 1.9L _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Fair winds Dave. You provided much inspiration to me...surmise to others as well. May the lee shore of the Samba always be on your front sector.
Thanks,

All you said is about right, and I mean it.
They sadly need to be kept in top shape to be somewhat reliable, sadly.

I agree on the maint needs as some are worse maybe from neglect. The ones i've owned, the 1st thing was test drive (if able) to find 'issues' then a thorough going over, not necessary a total rebuild, just the wear items-breaks,suspension etc. Every connector i can get to and reseat all plugs and check for corrosion etc. Then i work in the cosmetic parts as time permits. Then get n and go whenever and wherever i want, i do carry the usual spares and tool kit and rarely have had to use either. I went thru my parts box recently as i had forgotten just what was in there. Keep up the reg maint and happy motoring!! |

Dave, may your "trip down the road" be as enjoyable as your past "trips on the road" I gots a hunch well see you again soon.
Many who are trying to recover from an addiction actually end up failing and in your case, I hope you pleasantly fail.
