Looks like I will be doing lots of restoration wiring on this one. When the time comes, I will be buying a proper harness and methodically putting it back proper. There are also a bunch of toggle switches and buttons home-brewed on the dash and of course the dash itself is a mess.

I give it a 6. I don't see ANY loose conectors just hanging and where the hell is the wires that change color without going through something. Your not going to blow fuses with it in that good of shape, shame. _________________ Fatchicks: Daily drivers, donor cars, collectibles. What can't they do? |

Looks bone stock to me!
While I've seen much, much worse, I can see why you want to clean it up, particularly from what you've said is on the dash side! _________________ - John

At least you can get to it. Mine was in a ball crammed in around the instruments and fuse block. Took it all out and put everything on a panel where I could see what-was-what. There's a photo in my gallery. _________________ 74 Ghia, with 2110 engine |

Was probably cheaper than replacing the air box to hood seal.
Seal costs about $7 and the carboard is 'free'. _________________ -—--------—-------

Why are all of those wires different colors?
I thought they were all supposed to be the same color from the factory.
Why did they use all those yellow plastic things? Wasn't scotch tape factory on connections like that?
That's actually not to bad. I've had much worse. _________________ 69 Beetle

My car looked the same way when I first got mine. What I find works well is take a few pics so you have something to compare to. Next start removing everything that doesn't belong or no clue what it does. This should get you back to or close to factory. Now you can see what you are working with. Also your headlight relay(silver box) is missing its mounting bracket which acts as a ground. The tab on top is the ground with out it your headlights will not go low or high. good luck |

I'm getting ready to begin work on this wiring mess. I've gotten the full Wiring Works harness and have been studying the instructions, diagrams and comparing to what I can sort out on the car. I've got a few questions for the more experienced:
The wire routing in front is pretty obvious, but the rear lights are a mystery. Are they routed behind the engine insulation? And where are the connections made? (I haven't disassembled the lights yet).
The PO routed a cable along the side of the center hump that I know is wrong. But there is also a small cable routed along the length of the passenger side air tunnel. I'm guessing this is also wrong? Any reason for it?
Given the creative wiring in place, I will have to rely largely on reconstructing based on the instructions/diagrams. Any advice is appreciated. I do know to use the existing cables for pull through where needed.
It's a '70 standard Bug. Thanks in advance. |

Wires go from the hood into the drivers side and through the A pillar and along the left side and into the engine compartment through left side under the side window, you may have some foam in the rear arch into the engine compartment.
Bob
The connections for the tail lights are behind the tar board on either side and passes from the left side to right behind the tar board in front of the engine. |
