Hi
What are the thoughts on using the earlier style round top oil coolers as opposed to the later type shorter square top type. Does either have any cooling advantages, I am currently rebuilding another 54 motor and am debating buying a new square type or tracking down a round top type and get it pressure tested, cleaned etc.

20 years ago I found a round top cooler in a scrap yard. I cleaned it in and out and installed it and it has been in service ever snce. No real advantage over the later style.

There is nothing wrong with using an original however it is imperitive that it is cleaned out - a lot of sludge seems to collect in them and if the engine previously ran a bearing it will also be full of swarf. They are incredibly difficult to clean - I have run parts cleaner through for hours, shaken for hours, then tried a stronger solvent still to have crap come out. There is something to be said for a new cooler.
