Hey alll,
Quick question--does anyone out there have experience with engine fire damage--specifically the distributor? I have been making progress on my fire damaged bug, (started re-wiring process, removed the carb and will be ordering new carb, distributor cap, wires, etc...) My distributor is a 0231176044 with vacuum (009, style, original).
I would like to keep this if possible, but there is some ash on the inside, I will try to get photos, Should I just try this or do you think I should just order a new one?? |

009? eh? That number is not 009, but is late dual vacuum unit. FI model.

And give us more info on your engine.
Most of the time the vac cans are TOASTED if there is an engine fire.
I have choices for you if you need a distrib. LMK. |

Ok, yes your right, it was a fuel injected model (1600) but the previous owner put a carburetor (H30/31 PICT) and the 0231176044 distributor (original?) with vacuum.
My fire destroyed the cap of the distributor the ignition wires, the carb is burned (plan on replacing), coil, and the associated wires.
Right now I am replacing the wires (I am a newbie, so this is a slow but interesting process) and I am getting ready to order the parts that were burned...
I have tried to learn about the carb and distributor matching issues from various threads, but am still confused, especially when I look a jbugs.com and they have all these warning regarding compatibility. I am sure these are to make sure we dont match up the wrong carb/distributor.
The car, previous to the fire would drive OK, but I would notice hesitation when starting in low gears, then a burst of power.. I wonder if this was a carb/distributor issue....

An h30/31 mated to a dual vacuum distributor would likely result in drivability issues as the signal from the vac can would not match your carburetor.
