The Search is not strong with me. I've tried all day and found nothing. So here goes:
When taking my 2.0L AC engine apart for rebuild, I found all the plastic sleeves on the thru-case bolts (6 of them, I think) broken or in otherwise terrible condition. Now I'm almost ready to build the engine and was wondering: where I can get some replacements?
FYI, searches of BusDepot and Van-Cafe have proven fruitless.
Any info is much appreciated! Thanks! |

I may have some left over from my aircooled days. Of course mine would be from the early (1.7/1.8 liter type IV engine). I'll try to remember to check when I get home. I'm thinking these are the white (or whitish) things shaped like a football with a cross-section like a starfish... working from memory here... is that what you're talking about?

are you talking about those little star like plastic pieces?
I remember when rebuilding up a 2.0L for my '74 WAAAY back in the day the gasket kit came with new ones. That engine has since been retired.

That's true... they used to come in the gasket kit. If you're tearing it down you're going to need most of the gaskets anyway... have you bought a kit? Maybe that's the reason you're not seeing them priced separately.

The Victor Reinz gaskets sets still have them. |

Known as "case insulators".
And yes they do come in the Victor gasket kit. |

Don't really know what they do. Maybe they are only there to keep the bolts from vibrating against the case, but they could also be there to prevent the vibrations from damaging the bolts themselves.
If you don't have them you can get a fat o-ring and stuff it in the hole around the bolt and backfill it with high temperature silicone. |

i have the victor reinz gasket set; i'll rifle through it when i get home (and the garage temperature allows for human habitation).

My general rule of thumb: If you don't know why the engineers put them in, you best leave them in!
I used them on my Type IV rebuilds. Checked the old gasket stash... I've only got 4 (I don't know how I ended up with 4... whatever).

I always thought they were to hold the case bolts in place while you assembled the case halves. The type 1 engine had case studs rather than through bolts. You build the case with the one half on it's side. Without the holders, the bolts would be difficult to hold in place gravity and all. If you can get them still use them. _________________ ☮️ |

And the award goes to rsxsr. I posed the question to the guys at Aircooled Technology (I'm building a Camper Special) who said the insulators were used at the factory to ease engine assembly. They don't use them in their performance engines.
