Since very soon (just got my Bus Depot seals) I'll be pulling my '73 Bus side and rear windows for new seals....and since I'm the guy that has made 90% of all the Polycarbonate (Lexan was GE polycarbonate material, but they sold out) ACVW drag and road racing PC windows...

I'm thinking of making a set of tinted PC windows for my Bus and is there any interest in anyone else and if so I'll make master templates to make them.

JM

Can you post some pictures of the ones you made before?

How flexable are they?

Would someone be able to push on them and have them pop out from bending?

Do they fog over time?

I have not made them yet.

They will be the same thickness so they won't be able to push them in.

They shouldn't flex but until I make a set....

But being unbreakable plastic, they can be shipped UPS very easy but it will be a large package!

^Maybe I read that wrong

I don't care if they're on a bus or not. Just want to see how they look.

Although polycarb has its benefits (100% UV blocking and shatter resistance) -- it is also far more prone to scratching than glass. I vote no.

There not for everybody, but I like em! But Im a little off label. Take a look at my photos. Mine are 1/4" and they are flexible. They are 4 years old and one is starting to fog a little. All the back windows are Lexan. Gus

actually its not that prone to scratching. Yes....it needs a little care (no brillo pads, razor blades or scotch brite)...but its much more scratch resistant than acrylic that was used many years ago for cheap plastic windows.
All automotive light covers are made of Lexan....they hold up pretty well.
Also there are variants of "coated" lexan you can get to enhance scratch resistance.
Lexan...unlike acrylic and PETG...does not get that hazy-ness from zillions of fine scratches. Also...if you get a few scratches...you can polish them out.

If you have hard to find glass, lexan is not a bad deal. Ray

Flat windows? not in the least, but repro's of the Westfalia double pane windows at a reasonable price would be very interesting.

Well based on the 1000s of pairs of polycarbonate lenses I've seen patients scratch the hell out of in the past 10 years I'm going to respectfully disagree with you, Ray.

Yes you can add scratch resistant coatings and mix hardeners into the material, but at the end of the day in an automotive application where wind, dirt, and road debris are major players I see the life of any polycarbonate-based window much shorter-lived than glass.

Another factor for consideration is heat expansion... have you guys had any difficulty with any of your windows sealing improperly due to this characteristic of polycarb, werksberg?

Anything scratches....even glass if mistreated.

The problem plastic / PC getting hazy or damaged is mostly when people use glass cleaners on plastic parts as those glass cleaners has chemicals which attacks any plastic material.

That is why most head light lens get yellow and hazy. Someone use glass cleaner on them.

NEVER use glass cleaners on plastics! Use plastic wax or polishes like "210" spray.

I'm going to go ahead & make my tinted PC windows and test them out.
