Don't slam the car. The oil filter will drag, and dump all the oil. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

By "Kit" do you mean a collection of parts that you could buy that contained everything to do the conversion bar the donor engine. I dont think such a thing exists for the type3.
For a type3 if your going to attach the subaru engine to the vw gearbox then you will need the Kennedy engineering adaptor plate/ flywheel
http://www.kennedyeng.com/vw_por.htm
From there it depends on personal choices, if your going to use the stock subaru ECU then you get those parts with the engine. if not you will need to get an aftermarket ECU like megaquirt2.http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/index.php
You will need a radiator somewhere (usually front tyre well)
And a shortened sump will help with ground clearance

correct me all you like - there is no kit for a Type 3 to add a Subaru engine; you didn't ask if there was a kit for a Vanagon... _________________ póg mo thóin

I wish there was more documented 1.8l 8v or 16v swaps for what I'm doing to mine. |

1.8 Liter doesn't seem big enough to be worth the effort unless it had the Turbo? _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

i owned an impreza with the 1.8L... it doesn't need to turbo to be worth the swap. 300k mile engine, 118hp stock... what's not to like? _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

There are 3 different 1.8l subaru motors:
EA81, the 8v pushrod watercooled one in 82-85 subarus, nice and simple and reliable, but 90-100hp is all you'll squeeze out of it with higher compression and porting.
EA82, the OHC 8v found in 85-89 subarus and Loyale's 90-94. Garbage motor not worth swapping. 2 timing belts that like to break at 60k on the dot (non-interference but still sucks to be on the side of the road dead.) Same power potential as the EA81, but with the hassle of timing belts and hydraulic lifters that love to tick, and tick loud.
EJ18, the runt of the EJ series family. Same outide dimensions as an EJ22 (2.2l 135hp), but less power, less low end torque, and no real redeming features compared to an EJ22, however it is miles better than an EA82 and makes more power than an EA81 can be worked to in stock form.
You can also take a phase 1 EJ25 shortblock and put EJ22 heads on it, makes for a 10:1 comp motor that has lots of torque, gets off the line great, but runs out of breath by 5k rpm. Saves a lot of space compared to the DOHC heads that come on the phase 1 2.5l motors. You need to drill a couple extra holes in the EJ25 headgasket to match up with the EJ22 head but it's not complicated. Really a nice combo for a punchy, fun engine. |

That's a phase 2 SOHC 2.5, and it may be a bit wide to fit in the Type 3 engine bay. The phase 2 (99 and newer) 2.2 and 2.5l N/A engines have bulkier heads than the phase 1 (89-98 ) SOHC heads. The 06 will also have a lot more complex wiring setup and will be a lot more difficult to swap in than an early 90's engine harness would be.

As far as CC capacity to me any of the EJ range is fine, in europe we have the smallest ej16 (99hp and 108tq) 34mpg in the impreza
I found my old 66 stock squareback to be fine with 60hp so 39hp up on that must be a serious jump in performance (that about the power most $5000 1776's make.)
I think if you have a cheap donor engine at hand just go with it what ever it is.
Do a bit of searching on the 2006 engine though as I read the more modern they are the harder they can be to run with out certain electric parts from the dash etc to get them to run.
If your going to retain the stock subaru ecu the above need researching. _________________ (06:31:07) RoachGhia: "i drink dick way too fast" |

Go to the Shop Talk forums and check out the Conversion Perversion forum. Almost every engine swap imaginable is covered there. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

One of the guys in the Off Road forum is just finishing up his Bugaru as he calls it.
He put one in his Baja Bug.
He bought the whole Suby off Craigslist for a couple hundred. This way he had every thing from the Subaru that he might need. Everything he did not need, he put back onto CraigsList. And ended up making money on the deal.
He used the Subaru wire harness for the VW. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
