Greetings,
I have front brake squealing going on after storing my 86 vanagon for 8 months. I have pulled the wheels off and looked at the pads, they have plenty of meat. I'm thinking of pulling off the calipers for better inspection but noticed in the Bentley (46.5a) to use NEW "Self-Locking bolts when refastening the brake caliper housing". Does anyone know where to get these two bolts?
I have read other posts but nobody seems to mention it.
Any ideas on why they may be squealing.......?

CHEAP PADS???

I usually put some blue loctite on these screws, when they are new, they come with some sort of similar stuff on them, sometimes provided when you buy new pads.

bye!

Some brakes squeak, not really a big deal. You can try using anti-squeal compound, basically an adhesive, to glue the pads to the caliper and to the carrier.

I agree a few drops of Loctite 242 (the blue stuff) on those bolts and you'll be just fine.

So you guys are saying to go ahead and re-use the self-locking bolts that bentley says to replace? Seems a little strange, but I gues if they cant be found.....
I have not taken them off yet, maybe they can be matched up after I remove them. If not- I guess I'll go with putting them back on with Loctite.
Anyone else have experience with the Anti squealing gunk?

Reuse the bolts. The replace recommendation is common, but if there is no wear or rust, I would not hesitate to reuse. They are hard to find.
And sure, blue loctite won't hurt.

OK, thanks Buildyourown. Looks like I may have found them from vancafe....

But $16 for 4 bolts? And I dont think I would even really need the pin boots.

Yeah, that's just silly. If you want new bolts, go to your local bolt house and buy good ones.
The ones pictured aren't for attaching the caliper to the upright.

You see the blue stripe on the bolts? That's the threadlocker. After a couple times of threading the bolts in and out it's not good any more. That's why VW says to buy new ones. But the same effect can be had by just applying liquid threadlocker like Loctite 242.
