Here's mine: ABD 26 03 5
Sooo... 26 March 1985, right? And what does ABD indicate?
PO had it put in (used) in 1997. The invoice from the time doesn't mention if it might have been rebuilt, but only $600 for a used tranny in 1997 doesn't sound very promising.
Does anyone have experience pricing used or rebuilt trannys about that time? I was hoping to find out if it might have the improved 3-4 slider hub.
In the meantime, it's put on about 47k miles since then and holding steady, so I guess we'll see...

Ummm...no. Gibberish to me. English, please?
PS: This is just the tranny code. I understand the date, just verifying my numbers & curious about the "ABD".
Thanks... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

It's not jibberish. That is exactly what the code means. That is it, he has told you vehicle type, engine type, production period, gear ratios for all gears, and final drive ratios..That is all the code means, nothing more.

I don't know how to copy the xls file but go on Google and write Vanagon transmission ratio chart you will find all you need.

Ouch! ...except his information without further explanation meant nothing to ME. Where did this come from? I didn't know exactly what andy's post meant (I know it was vehicle info, but all those numbers...???), plus the helpful "key" in the 2nd line didn't even line up...I tried, but I didn't know enough to understand it. I'm new here - get it?
As a teacher, I know that information without explanation can be worthless - this proves it to me very clearly! I'm not stupid, I just needed some understanding and hadn't been successful finding it with my limited (but slowly expanding) experience. Andy provided the raw data and snowsyncro provided the explanation, albeit with a fair dose of "what-are-you-stupid?" added for flavor...not something I've come to except here on the Samba.

Thanks...now THIS is actually helpful...AND I now understand everything about what you had posted the first time. I appreciate you giving me a 2nd chance!
So as I understand it, the letters in question (at the beginning of the tranny code) are a reference code for the intended vehicle/production timeframe/specific gear ratios for that tranny...yes? That's a lot of information to get out of just three little letters!
Thanks...
PS: Looks like this is an older tranny originally from an '85, 1.9. (So much for hoping I had the improved 3-4 slider...) _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender
