Th SA grill is awesome, and the LOOK of the fogs is great, however I do have to ask if the air flow to radis not obstructed by those fog lights, seems to me you need every bit of flow over the rad. Maybe the fogs should be mounted closer to the signal lights. |

Well....I have thought of that and since these are fog lights....I think they have to be further apart. There are no more tabs on this awesome bumper and will have to have more welded on....$$$$$.
The other thing is....this bumper is sold by Van-Cafe....wouldn't they have figured out proper light tab location? And I think it's based on the Projektzwo bumper....the German aftermarket bumper....
Anybody else have any ideas about light placements?????? _________________ 1987 Vanagon Westfalia (manual) - "Van Hildegaard"

You could always go the Benz way and do away with the fog lights if using the South African Grill.
Use Hella 7'" on the outer right, left with 55/100 bulbs (must be relayed) and then use yellow tinted in the inner smaller right/left.
My 300CD Turbodiesel is set up like that. Brilliant light, fog or no. |

A customer is interested in me doing a SA headlight/grille swap on his '84. About how long might I expect it to take start to finish? He wants a quote and I have no idea how much time I'd have in the project. It has the round, not square, headlights in it currently.

I did it in around 2 hours. (counting beer and pizza breaks)
And some of that time was spent looking for some little clips to put into the headlight buckets to get the corners of the grill to fasten. _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |

does anybody know how to wire the 3 prong plastic connectors?
I had to buy aftermarket ones and they are only identified with different wire colors:
black - likely Gnd
Red - ??
and Red with a black stripe?
or maybe someone knows how to ID the prongs on the bulb itself??

Left connector is Ground - Connect to Brown wire van side
Top connector is Low Beam - Connect to Yellow/Black wire
Right connector is High Beam - Connect to White/Black wire
For best results when changing headlights, be sure to inspect your ground connections at the grounding stars above the fuse block when you hook everything up. If you are going to run anything above stock wattage power bulbs you should add a set of relays so you don't cook your headlight switch. _________________ Jay Brown

I am about to install the SA grill on my Westy. Did any of you put in the two extra mounting tabs that are missing on the square head lights vans ? Or do you just use two mounting studs and leave the other two not used ? _________________ Steve

For back up, I ended up adding xtra grounds drilled into the cross beam behind the headlights. Sealed the grounds with electrical sealant.

Steve - the square head lights vans HAVE two extra mounting tabs that are riveted on - they are not missing; you drill out the rivets
see the qadas.com link above - pic at 3.0; my '86 was just like that _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Sorry I didn't make it clear enough. The square head lights brackets had two openings for the spring clips at the top each side. The round head light buckets has only one and the top of the grill opening of the body has two brackets for the spring clips, one on each side so the SA grill's four posts can clips into. The later vans do not have these bracket so the inner two post of the SA grill is not " clipped " into anything. Just want to know if any one has welded on these extra brackets on the square head light vans. _________________ Steve

I transferred the "Center Grill Attachment Point" (the little slot-head prong with its rubber bumper) from the old square headlight grill to my new SA Grill, but it doesn't seem to latch onto the sheet metal cutout on the body of the Van.
Is the rubber bumper supposed to be inside the the sheet metal cutout?
or does the rubber part go in between the sheet metal cutout and the plastic grill? _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Between the grill and the metal tab just like the original grill. Push hard with a screw driver with the slot of the pin at horizontal. _________________ Steve

I just installed the South African grill kit on my 1989 Westy, and I could not be happier! I took me about 2 hours, but the instructions from GO WESTY were right on and made the install super easy! I was on the fence about the upgrade since I bought my Westy about 8 months ago, but I am glad that I finally pulled the trigger. I did the Hella 70477 for the outside lights and WOW what a difference! I can actually see when I drive at night! Tomorrow I will tackle the headlight relay that I bought from Van Cafe...i hope it is as easy as the grill, and i hope that their instructions are as clear...any pointers? |

I just installed the relay for my 89 Westy along with the south african kit. How do I know what bulbs to purchase at my local auto zone? |

The outer (main) bulbs are H4 type. Inner (high beam) bulbs are H3 type.
AutoZone will likely only have the standard 55/60W (55W low beam / 100W high beam) H4's available. You can get higher output 55/100W or 80/100W online. For the H3 for the square inner high beams I would stick with the standard 55W. Running high wattage bulbs in these small enclosures can lead to significantly shortened bulb life.
If you are getting all new bulbs for your SA Grill, you might want to check amazon.com, they usually do free shipping for orders over $25.00. _________________ Jay Brown

I found this older thread. I had planned on purchasing the SA Grill Kit, and relay as well. I hit a deer the other day which busted a headlight, bent some front end metal, and cracked the lower and upper grill, so I went ahead and purchased the kit and relay.
But I'm at a loss on how to wire the inners. I have very limited electrical skills. I noticed the outers have a connection that fits to the original. How do you wire the inners? They come with a plug and two wires, one that is white with a yellow stripe and one that is brown. However, there are 4 wires that go to the original outers. on the driver's side, there are one yellow, one white, and 2 red(or brown) wires that both go to one prong. On the passeger side, there are one white with black stripe, one yellow with black stripe, and 2 reds that go to the same respective prong.
For the inners, do I cut out the connector? I'm confused on what wires to splice. For splicing, do I need a soldering iron?
I apologize in advance for my amateur questions. |

Also, it would probably be helpful for you to know that I have an 85 vanagon, with round headlights, not rectangular. |
