What sort of success is being had with replacing pushrod tubes with the collapsible type. I had to replace one of the stock tubes. Two shops have each had a try (2 tubes and installs) and both times an oil leak has developed at the telescoping part shortly after. I'd like to stop this leak but hesitate to try a third ($$)......but the only alternative is to pull the head.

Replaced all 8 tubes with collapsible 4 years ago and haven't seen a leak since. _________________ 1984 Vanagon GL

I only use the collaspe type tubes on my boxers.
No issues at all over the years.

I'm satisfied with mine, over a yr now. Don't try the cheap(made only, not the price) ones ,they all leak. Use at least double o ringed ones. |

Mine only leaked when I accidentally pinched one of those white rubber seals... and be sure you're applying a film of oil on the mating surfaces before installation.

I've had a set of Jay Cee's in one of my vans now for well over a year with not a drop of oil to be seen. They are type 1 tubes, but are installed backwards in a WBX.
And they do look the deal!

Well that is good news. Collapsibles can indeed work. Bad news is that after two "pro" attempts I'm still leaking. One said "oh well" when I called about continued leak. I'm in Canada and do believe that the tubes used were "vw" ( read here once that those are "guaranteed to leak"). The third shop I'm experimenting with will get a shot at this, along with a timesert, next month. I will check on what brand they are using. cb performance seems to get thumbs up on theSamba.
Further input always welcome and I'll keep you posted.

I replaced my push rod tubes myself, no leaks. I did smear a little high heat sealing compound around the ends. Just be real careful you have the push rods seated in the lifters before bolting up. |

I had 2 PRTs replaced at Hogg's on the Malahat a few months ago, no leaks so far and he only charged my $65 hour and I believe he doesn't have a problem with you bringing in your own parts. |

My WBX is still running its original tubes, and the van is easily the least drippy vehicle in my fleet. I've never used the spring-loaded tubes, but I really like them in theory. _________________ Casey--

A vote for the Van Cafe collapsible tubes. Multiple O rings, easy to figure out and easy to use. No leaks. I used grease to seat the seals as others pointed out, and while installing I carefully hand pushed each end into its seat, and rotated a bit to help fully seat. I suspect if you simply let the spring pressure (mild) do the seating it may not end up with proper seal pressure. In other words, just a small amount of care in install - as if its your own vehicle, for instance - and they work fine.

Yes, I'd like to know that too
I know about the quality, that's why I wanna buy them, even if a little trimming is required. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

They look like they are too large in diameter, but I'm only going by the picture. |

I looked at the push rod seal 113109345A
And they fit:
Bus (Type 2)
1960-1971 View Fit Details
Karmann Ghia
1961-1974
Beetle
1961-1978 View Fit Details
Type 3 (Squareback/Fastback)
1966-1973 View Fit Details
Super Beetle
1971-1979
Thing
1973-1974 View Fit Details
Vanagon
Air Cooled : 1983
Diesel : 1983-1984 View Fit Details
1.9 Liter : 1983-1985 View Fit Details
2.1 Liter : 1986-1991 View Fit Details
Syncro : 1986-1991 View Fit Details
Although this part number is also given for a Vanagon only : 070109345
From the picture, just the outer edge of the seal differs, so I believe the push rods are the same diameter. The aluminum tube with the nuts should fit if there is enough thread to adjust. The length from Aircooled to watercooled must not differ much, does it? _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

I didn't think about that… I never tore a VW WBX apart before _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.
