I am still on my quest for suitable "donut" to replace my OEM spare wheel.
I was previously advised to locate a donut from an Audi V8, I also assumed that as I have Mercedes wheels on the van a Mercedes donut would fit and be proper and adequate.
So then I head to the local Pig A Part and promptly locate a Mercedes with the sought after "donut".
Victory says I
Nay my friend, the expected numbers such as 5x112 or whatever they maybe, the ET number, the J number, none are inscribed anywhere on said wheel. However a Ford logo is clearly stamped on the wheel making me reasonably assume that although in the boot of a Mercedes said wheel did not belong to the Mercedes. I did carefully examine this wheel and tire for something like 15 minutes, my better half who is a hawk also did and we found nada relevant to the information I needed.
This long preamble leading to the questions
- Are spare wheel of the donut confession marked like ordinary wheels?
- Are they marked differently
- Are they NOT marked ?
Saying get a wheel from such and such a car is somewhat unreliable in the salvage yard environment as, as we all know, things get moved and thrown around in quite an anarchic way.
Lastly let's not go into the why and how I need/want a donut as a spare as Rudy would say .... this is another story.

Some are marked, some are not. It is my experience that most all from Mercedes or VW/AUDI are marked with at least a part number and usually with the size and offset as well.
Mercedes does not use "donut", or compact, spares. Rather, they use spare-specific wheels with full size tires on them. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Ohh, compact spares... Now I get it.
I saw doughnuts and got lost after that.
I need a spare too, not the bellyfat one either.
Would be nice to have a breakaway tire under there. |

I think the user pete000 has a porsche spare with a small tire on it, that looks undersized but fits easily in the spare spot. See this picture:

PM to pete000 for the specs.

EDIT: maybe I misunderstood your question? Vanagon steel rims are easy to find for free on Craigslist. Is there a specific size you're looking for? _________________ 1990 GL 7-passenger

Oh a space saver spare wheel? Late vw passats are good if you have wide spacers on your van or get the center hole machined out,
Porche are 130pcd, I figure you need 112pcd. |
