Since my original post, the clutch worked ok for a couple of years with the shudder now and again,... then this year the clutch went, so I replaced the clutch and had the flywheel machined....all is well now.
Van Cafe or GoWesty one time stated that clutch shudder was caused by worn tips on the crossover shaft and should be filed smooth when having clutch replaced??????
Good luck |
Schoonerman, I'm sorry I didn't see your post when I added my update. Glad things worked out for you! Hmmm I don't remember seeing that but I'll follow up on the filing tip.
Thanks for the good luck. _________________ Julia

After i put in my 2.5 suby, using the small car kit, i had clutch chatter. Fairly bad at times. I think it's largely due to worn out front transmission mount. I guess the new engine has more torque and makes it more apparent? Hard to say for sure. I got a heavy duty mount from Bostig and the problem is better but not solved. There is also more engine / gear noise transmitted into the cabin with the H.D. trans mount, which is a bummer since these things are already super loud.
I got a new clutch kit (friction and pressure plate) from smallcar as part of the conversion kit, and the subaru flywheel was from a junkyard (engine was from an auto, no flywheel).
Tough to say what factors may be a problem. Only thing i can eliminate for sure is the throwout fork thing, since the smallcar kit uses an entirely new bellhousing and different clutch mechanism.
Not sure if any of that is helpful, but it's related to your topic anyway! *shrug* _________________ 1984 Westfalia Wolfsburg - 2.5L Subaru - Sold - Preparing to move to the dark side (4x4 Ford van) |

Bad mounts can't cause clutch chatter, they just make what you have feel worse. It has to start in the clutch. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

quite right ..
when you replace the shagged oil seal (the cause) make sure you include the little fibre washer too. oh and your input shaft isn't badly grooved where the seal lip touches it |
