I am designing and fabricating a radio mount and locking glovebox for my '73.
Does anyone have experience with fabricating one or both of these for their Things? Details? suggestions?
Does anyone have the Thing Shop radio mount/glovebox installed? If so, could you provide some pictures?
Any other help, ideas, or brainstorms would be very much appreciated.
(I have already read the thread "To Radio or not to Radio") _________________ Volkswagen - The People's Car! |

Thank you very much for the information and pictures. I'll be looking for some parts this Sunday at the BugoRama. (if anyone has Thing instrument panels for sale (left headlight/heater switch panel as well as right hazard/lighter panel) let me know)
Is yours a '73 Thing? What did you do to accompany the heater/defroster switch? (it seems you've elimitated it altogether) _________________ Volkswagen - The People's Car! |

The thing shop's box cover and radio panel is pretty straight forward and looks oem, if a bit expensive. Just paint it the right color and screw it in place. That's probably the way to go, unless you have the time and equipment to fab one as cool as big one's.....which is a work of art, imho.
I made an industrial "iron worker's" box cover and radio plate with the intention of keeping the stock look at bay, so to speak. Its made from 1/8" plate steel to resist prying open with a screw driver. The lockset that I installed is a std vw engine cover lock with thumb handle. It is keyed to my ignition key as is the key on my storage box behind the front seats (where the back seat used to be when I began this project to turn the Thing into a most useful working means of tranportation). Btw, the TS stock locksets for engine covers are Not VW and cannot be keyed to a stock VW key...... I tossed the one I got from them after a locksmith assessed the situation, then got "real" VW used locksets from Mike at TU for $10 bucks each. My goal was, is, will be to have one key to operate the entire Thing. _________________ NTHANG, LLC |

Gawd, Biggins, that is nice work. Do you want to build them to sell? How much? |

That Ghia chair is pretty slick. Did you ever think of having a foot rest with brackets that come out of the bumper holes like a lazyboy? |

I wanted to find an old couch with recliner for the mechanism so it would rool away from the wall when you recline. But I just needed to do something with it so I made it around an old office chair. When I get it done I'm taking it to work and set beside my desk.
I have a gas door section that I want to cut into the side for a cup holder. |

From the reading I have done over at the STF I am honored that I was able to be your first post over here at the Samba. You do a great job in the Thing forum there and it does seem to be more active than here.
I also like the "Euro Look" and "Forced Induction" forums.
I would love to see you have 3000 posts on the Samba. |

Emersonbiggens does have a foot stool made for the ghia chair. Its a 5 lug Empi sprintstar wheel. He just hasn't posted a photo of it yet. LOL _________________ My last fortune cookie said:
