Last week both my odometer and trip odometer stopped working at the same time, and I now notice that the right side of the odometer looks to be a bit further forward - that is, pushed away from the cluster face towards the front of the vehicle.
Does this suggest the typical failure mode that I've seen described in several posts here?
Thanks for any help...

Yes, the rod with the drive gear for the numbers has moved out of position. This is a common failure.

I just dealt with this a few weeks ago. It is an easy fix. TenCents repair with a tab on the left side to keep the rod in place works well. If you are going to tackle this yourself, you might as well check the metal gear for slippage while you are in there. I didn't and now I will have to go back in to fix that.

My odometer died at exactly 100,000 and 2 tenths miles and it turned out that the metal worm wheel on the right side of the shaft had come off. I was somewhat surprised to see that it was just a light press fit between the worm wheel and shaft.

My fix was to install two 0-80 sets screws in the worm wheel and with 1001046. miles on the clock it has been holding well.

While I was in the speedo I went ahead and took the entire number set apart and cleaned it then reset the odometer to the original mileage.

Phil, I think to get that odo apart to the extent you did, one has to remove the small coiled spring from the speedo spindle. How did you do that without mangling it?

If you slide the rod with the plastic gear out to the left far enough the metal gear will fall of and it could be predrilled. No need to go really deep into the speedo assembly unless you really want to.
