I am looking for a vanagon era crew cab. What years are better than others? What should I be looking for in the way of problems? |

Peter,
83-85 had 1.9 motors round headlights
86-91 had 2.1 motors square headlights
Problem areas
High mileage on cars by now should have
rebuilt motors and trannys.
They are not fast but keep up with traffic.
Always but Always watch out for any Rust, even minimal is not good, especially around the seams. I must have looked at 10
crewcabs in Canada before I found mine.
If buying from Canada you have to check if the vehicle will pass and is U.S.spec. |

I beg to differ on the headlight issue. Just about all double cabs (crewcabs) in Europe came with round headlights until the end of the production run. The exception would be Tristars (the ones with four doors) and some rare double cabs which got the square headlight option.
They generally came with more engine options than in the US as your figures indicate above. Some came with the Digijet injected 2.1 which had the highest HP. 112 hp IIRC. Then some came with the US spec 2.1 Digifant (95HP). Then there are the ones which came with a 1.9 with a single progressive carb (most common of dokas). Then there are the diesels. I'm not sure what sizes they came in. But my 1989 16" Syncro Double Cab came with the 78 HP 1.6 liter turbodiesel. Oh yeah, I have round headlights too. This is reputed to be the only 16" Synncro in the US. There may be one lurking in Canada but I am not sure. Let me know if any of you have of others in the US.
