What a day.
Completed rust repair on the four window openings on the body, now in etch primer.
Then, tired of looking at the disfigured face of this bus, I thought I'd clean up the nose. 3 hours later I was still grinding and chopping off bondo.
The "spots" left on the snout are dents and holes. In person it looks like tin foil that got crunched up, then flattened out.
I noted some grease-pencil marks in the headlight buckets, gently scrubbed them with 400-grit sandpaper. Identical markings in both sides. Any thoughts as to what they mean?
In the end, the garage looked like Tony Montana's desk in
Scarface,

Thanks Lind, I never noticed those paint archives.
MIG tank got filled, onto more welding...upside-down today as I noticed this big hack under the dash:
Finished that and stripped the dash down, probably the only part that doesn't have bondo on it! Note the holes in the windshield frame in this photo, toast.
I went to work on the rear cargo door, as fitting the B, C pillars, right rocker and door fitment is dependent on the doors being "right." I thought I'd try fixing one. Bought a forward door from CA (thanks Corey) as npbusguy warned this effort would take too much time. I tried anyway.
Neil was right. These are a pain to get just right, but it can be done.

For those that don't know, Neil (npbusguy) is a die-hard bus fan. He would rather fix old busses than drink beer!
I am very lucky to have him helping me get this bus looking right.
This weekend's progress:
The California forward cargo-door doesn't line up well. I took off the paint as well as 1/2" thick bondo and found out why...
Getting it all lined up with decent gaps takes patience!
Big thanks to npbusguy for all his help. |

Really nice work Jim! |
X2 - this piece came out looking really good, as is the rest of the bus. Thanks for taking the time to update the thread regularly. |

The nose doesn't look savable, but my plan is to carefully take it off and see what I can do. Can't do much more damage than has already been done!
Worked the cargo door into submission, a bit unorthodox measures to get the door gap right, but it is starting to look better.
I was surprised to see how much scale was inside.
I made my own B-pillar pieces for the left side, came out O.K.
Left rocker is on, the inspector had a look at the floor fit.

There aren't many more warm days left around here, so I primed the bare metal areas. I've been slowly pushing dents and trying to make it all straight.
To fit the doglegs I want the A-pillars to be right, at least be all there for fitting!
So that led to the nose skin removal:
I'm glad Klassicfab makes the window frame section. I didn't expect these to be so bad, of course I didn't help drilling dozens of holes in them.
I guess with a midwest bus you should expect the worst. |

A-pillars are in, fitting everything together so the doors close with nice gaps takes time.
When the doors fit nicely, the floor didn't fit close enough to the A-pillars.
I gave them a very light pull. Note: Don't try this kind of thing without plenty of safety gear on.
After a couple days of fitting, the gaps are getting closer.
