I think the most important thing to ask atm is... how does it run now. 1mm isnt much difference from the 37mm vents synonomous with the stock 48 weber carbs. I like the 55 idles, i think they are pretty close thinking about your setup. 200 airs are fine for under 1000 altitude although you can go down to 190's. 140's are too small like many of the more seasoned Sambaists have mentioned. I agree as well. Before you do any ordering, i suggest a detailed operation explaination from idle to wot , noticing the progression changes from idle-2500 and up. What number was your sparkplug at currently according to the scale? Every performance motor is different, you will need to start @ 7 degree btdc and work your way up. Your temperture at full operating temperature will be your guide. For instance im running a 2276 , 010, 44x38 wedgeports, NGK DP8EA-9's w/ 70 F10, 175, 200's w/ 40 vents ( i just changed the plugs one heat range colder today and rejetted down my idles. It likes a 9/10 btdc timing. Took it for a spin and the plugs look like between 14 and 15). It sounds like a lot of work jetting and tuning but its not. Just be systomatic and make a log. Thats what i do now. However, i suspect either the 150 or 155's will be your main change due to the size of your vents and air jets. Wont know till you create your baseline of its current operation performance.

You keep comparing 48 IDAs, to 44 IDFs, and there is no sense in that. 48 IDFs for instance come with 40mm venturis. The jetting and architecture are different.

Ok, now I am confused. I have had my timing at 28 to 32 deg @ 3000 to 3500 rpms.
I tried this at different degrees between that range.
Are you saying that I should have the timing at 7º BTDC @ idle or at 3000 to 3500 rpms?
I also have a Bosch 010
My plugs look close to 20 on that chart

Your plugs look fine in that case. You have room to richen imo. But I can't suggest anything without knowing your current performance. Start that logbook yet?

"All the reciprocating assembly was fully balanced as were pistons."

So what are your pistons going to do?

The pistons were weight matched perfectly to each other .

I checked out my degree wheel and it was spot on.
I change the mains to 150's and re adjusted the A/F and set the timing at 7 btdc and it fixed the pinging plus it runs smoother at freeway speeds and gets there quicker. Smoother shifting from 1st to 2nd.
I had it way too advanced. It was @ 15º @ idle. I was setting the timing at 3000 rpm's and I think thats where I went wrong.
All I need to do is get some nice ported heads and dump these Bug Pack's for some Steve Tim's or Brothers 42x37's and I'll be set.
Now if only I could find some lash caps that will stay on I'll be able to put my 1.25 ratio's back on. Bergs is out of them for another month.
They never have anything I have tried to order in stock.

Glad you got it running good. I use the Scat or Bugpack chromoly lashcaps and they work great.

Your plugs are white, due to the WONDERFUL Ethanol gas they have now!

I only run clear gas in my VW and my quads.
