I was wondering the same thing. It seems like you would have to drive off an embankment just right. Or something that would stop your front end real quick and allow the back to pop up. Scary either way. I'm glad she was ok.

Well, it looks as if the driver was unattentive for a few seconds and .........well, the photos pretty much tell the rest of the story!

The conversion and drivetrain will be moved over to his 'new' '91 Orly-blue Syncro Westy.

Karl,
Curious if his "new" van was bought last week in Fresno, CA with a bad motor? If so, it looked like a pretty sweet deal!
Glad they're ok.

No, it was purchased in Seattle before that smokin' Fresno deal was posted.

The RR wheel caught the culvert hard enough to break the axle - wheel and brake drum attached - and launch the rear into a flip and roll.

All it takes is a second... I think we've all been there, but luckily is usually doesn't turn out to be this disastrous. That said, the closest I came to rolling a van was a '74 Ford with a small sailboat on the back. I was on a new gravel road, so I was staying well away from the shoulder. The shoulder started collapsing a good 4' from the edge and "sucking" the van over the edge. I was trying to pull the thing back toward the center of the road without over reacting, but when I finally decided to stop the only thing that was keeping us upright was the sailboat acting as an anchor and dirt that was scooped up behind the wheels. The van was sitting at something close to a 45º angle to upright and there was an easy 6" of space between the uphill tire treads and the dirt that had been scooped out by the wheels. It was dumb luck that it didn't roll down the hill. I replayed that in my head all night while we slept on the side of the road waiting to look for help at daybreak... I've never had a road sink underneath me like that and I don't think there was any reason to suspect that it would from 4' away from the edge.

let's suppose that he'd been in a sports car... would it have rolled (or tumbled)??

much less likely - that is the Achilles heel of a large high center vehicle
