I talked for a minute with the owner and I believe he said they are stock engines and 2 wheel drive. |

If they shuttle river rafters up 128, along the colorado river valley, that's a flat drive. Of course the van wouldn't accelerate very fast, but I'm sure that a business like that has to keep an eye on cashflow and can't spend a lot of money on expensive SVX conversions. _________________ 1990 GL 7-passenger

I ridden and spoke with owner/driver several times. Totally stock 1.9L WBXs. Amazingly good power for the weight, but we've had to get out and walk a few sections the bus couldn't climb to the Porc Rim trail. He apparently has a collection of Vanagons of his own (not shuttle buses) and does his own mech work. |

They mostly shuttle mountain bikers, the top of porcupine is a popular destination, and the roof rack is totally filled with bikes _________________

I've been to Moab several times and seen those. I've never ridden in one but think they look pretty cool. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

I think one was(is) even an air cooled, at least that's what I remember years ago. It made me see first hand how tough an air cooled was, it's hot out there and those things work hard! |

Do you have a link for that road? How many seats are in the Vanagon?(maybe a picture of the inside?) Geez how much do you guys think that thing weights fully loaded? _________________

The Porcupine Rim trail is typically accessed from downtown Moab, heading up the Sand Flats recreation area (which is initially impressively steep). Levels out, become dirt and then the hills and climb starts again up to either the "old"/traditional Porc rim entry point, or for extra he'll shuttle you to newer/higher access points like LPS/UPS and more (I haven't been further up than these 2 yet-usually snowed in when I'm in Moab).
I don't have any interior pics, but spartan would be a good description-all custom welded bench seats with firm/flat cushions. I think I counted 12 people plus a full load of bikes on the roof this last spring. The van has a central welded-in body section from another Vanagon, with the slider door welded shut, spaced between the front and back end of a normal Vanagon.
It has to be the hardest working 1.9L I have ever seen-the weight must be ungodly.
