Hey all...
Doing the right head gasket right now. Got my Head gasket kit from a popular vendor and it was short one gasket that I need...
The vendor is talking about taking several days to replace it, then it needs to be shipped. I have been ready to put the head back on for a week and I am going crazy... Local mechanics helping me search, im sitting around bored, taking everything apart and cleaning, painting etc... The engine bay is looking pretty good, but I need to get her back on the road!

OK heres the question:

The gasket kit comes with (among many other things) three round rubber seals for the the cyl itself:
2 small green (goes into groove in top of cyl sleeve, one per side)
2 small black (goes into groove in bottom of cyl sleeve, one per side)
2 bigger black (goes between cyl sleeve and cyl head, next to flat metal gasket.

In the Bentley, it is on Page 15.22, and is called an "O-ring gasket".
I called the vendor, and over the phone we came up with part #025 101 177 "Outer cyl liner", which has turned out to be one of the small green ones.

Anyone know the part # on this thing, or where I can buy just one of these little ba$t&rd$?

Thanks alot.

HEY... Anybody out there willing to make me a copy of the EKTA?... O.K. im pushing my luck!

Later folks

OK...
Regarding my gasket woes I have learned a couple things:

1. Talked to local mechanics earlier today who worked on wasserboxers back when there were more of them out there. They didnt remember a rubber seal going in with the flat metal one, just the flat metal one...

2. Because I was really bored and curious, I tore down the blown 1.9 that came with my vanagon and saw that there was no rubber ring in there on that engine... just the flat metal ring. That engine had NO water leaks at all.

Also, interestingly, whomever installed the heads in the 1.9 that I just tore down didnt put sealant in the big rubber gasket on the case side, just on the flat side that faces the heads... Interesting. I'll say it again... the 1.9 had no water problems.

Questions:
1. So, im wondering if this rubber ring is even necessary....
Anyone know?

If the answer is no, then I can put it all back together tomorrow!
Yee-Hah!

2. Any reccomendations on whether or not to put sealant on both sides of the big rubber head gaskett that I am about to install?

Thanks alot!

Well, I guess I'll go ahead and wrap up this little thread all by myself.
Between the Bentley two exploded views of the head and case
1. Page 15.22
2. Page 13.36
And the images at www.bensplace.com/heads.htm

I have finally figured it out... the big (thick) rubber ring goes on the bottom of the cyl jugs someplace, and all that is necessary to put in the cyl pockets in the heads is the flat metal one.

In case you were wondering.

Yours,

Joe,

I've got ETKA if you still need a part number. I can NOT make you a copy though.

For this type of question I would ask reknown Vanagon specialist Boston Bob (www.bostonengine.com). He rebuilds Waterboxers on a weekly basis and knows his stuff. Tell him I sent you, if you call.

I was looking at the position of the waterpump on a 2.1 engine in the bentley today, which riased some doubts about whether I actually had a 2.1 or not in my van. I blew one on a road trip and had to leave it with a mechanic who put in one that he had used, that he said was a 2.1.

I havent given it a second thought, as the engine thats in the van now is generally more powerful than the one that dropped a valve.
Anyway, the guy let me keep the old engine, and I noticed that both of these beasts have the waterpump on the front. 2.1's are supposed to have the pump on the back, by #3 right?

Anyway... Im really confused right now and I would be really grateful if you would please look up the part #'s for:
1.9 case
2.1 case

Thanks alot.
