I seem to be going through exhaust gaskets cuz it pops on deceleration. I first used copper ones, couldn't get them to seal right.
I got some paper ones, they got real brittle.
I got some fiber/metal type I have on here now and the exhaust nuts all had to be retightened.
Is there a real good one that will work best?
I thought about using the stock metal ones that come in the gasket set when I built this thing but wasn't sure.

Im surprised you cant get copper exhaust gaskets to work for you. They work well for me by just tightening down on the nuts. Youve named just about all the rest though and everything else dont seal as good to me as the slip on copper ones.

There's two types of copper I believe..one has a crush seal, and the other is just a flat piece of copper....these are the ones I've been using and reusing for many years.

Maybe your flanges are not flat, or they're coming together out of parrallel. If they were over tightened then the flange ears can be warped. They'll never seal. There's so much tubing and weight in the A1 system some seating in may be necessary, so retighten once or twice after a high heat cycle.

Is there a recommended torque when using the copper gaskets?

I use Hi Temp Copper RTV. I haven't used an exhaust gasket in over a decade.

They're not sealing because something is not bolting up flush. Check it out and see what's wrong and fix it, then any of them should seal. I like coppers.

I always have the exhaust nuts go loose on me when i use the stock type metal gaskets that come in the kits. the ones that have a thin piece of metal on both sides, and a crush type ring. EVERY TIME i use them, i always have to retighten them later. Not sure why. I've tried torquing them, that didn't work. I then tried tightening the hell out of them, just before i thought i was gonna break the stud, and they still came loose. I decided to use the cheap ass paper gaskets instead, and the nuts didn't come loose, but they blew out after about a month. and i made sure they flanges were all flat, because i took a file to them, and flattened them perfectly flat.

Victor Reinz metal/composite for Vanagons. Best ones out there. It's normal to need a retorque after some use, but only once.

You can buy them individually at www.GowestyAutoParts.com, search as if for a Vanagon 84-91.

Anneal your copper gaskets by heating them up with a torch untill they are almost red hot to make them dead soft, use a little hi-temp silicone and let the silicone set over night and they should seal.

The copper ones I've used have that raised ring near the center. I think that time I didn't get them parallel so I went with the plain paper ones which seemed to seal well but then when I took the header off again they just crumbled so I thought they were crap. I went to bugformance and got the Vanagon gaskets which are on it now but it pops on deceleration so I am going to change them out. These are the ones I had to retighten.
Well, my kid retightened them
I haven't tried the RTV yet except where the muffler meets the header like Tiger suggested.
I'll just go get those Vanagon ones and try them again.
I do use a rubber mallet to seat the tubes before I cinch them down.
I have some Tims stage 2's coming soon, i'll do it then.
Thanx guy's.
