Might be too big and could actually make your motor run cold.
Most oil coolers are 1/4 that size.
Just throwing that out there.

Yeah kinda big and sorta the wrong shape- most oil coolers are shaped to have a thermostaticlly controlled fan on them
- might be useful as the "rad" for a liquid cooled intercooler though

Overkill for sure - or use 1/8" tubing...

It has a Y fitting on it. 1 pipe into 2. You could use 1/2 but still it is huge.
Used to see stuff like this on splitteys and bays on dead tour years ago.

You can cut down and use the small section from an '84 Vanagon condenser. You just need to cut, separate, and add a new compression fitting.

just get a EMPI 96 plate cooler with fan, the whole package is about $150 or so, it is made for oil, has a fan that fits, not as much work either.

That comment is pretty useless. What do you mean? I'm wondering what the problem is with empi in your experience? I've been on here for about a year and could benefit from a sentence or two more. I just rebuilt my air cooled and I've been think about an oil cooler to protect it. Thanks in advance.

EMPI parts are shotty at best. Their customer support is not existent. And most vendors that sell them are clueless how to resolve a problem.

Buy a cooler from a quality vendor who stands behind what they sell.

got an empi cooler on my van, works fine, no quality issues at all, friend has a 72 row on his car, got mine from Bugformance of San Jose, a shop of knowledgable VW folks that has been around for a long time, a very long time. haven't had to deal with EMPI customer servce cause haven't had a problem with my cooler nor has my friend with his 72 row. Same cooler is also sold at a local well known many decades old knowledgable speedshop, but not under the EMPI name. (for a bit more money might I ad)

works for me , whats you story with an EMPI cooler?

Canadian made cooler by the way! thats what is stamped right on the cooler must be them shoddy Canadians at work????

Here's what some "Bay" people think of EMPI.

EMPI Parts

Do a search in the engine forum and you'll get a lot more.

Not if you have a thermostat in the system, like you should anyway. One problem I can see is the oddball thread size on the pipes, if you can solder different copper ends onto them it would be an awsome oil cooler.

Now just figure out where to mount that behemoth. Razz

You always want a t-stat in the system, but with a too-large cooler the t-stat will frequently cycle open and shut, when a fluid t-stat setup will live longer if it can open and stay open for the duration of the running session, with excess heat trimmed by the cooler (and fan if so equipped) rather than the t-stat. You should really match your cooler to the amount of heat you need to shed, in the case of a wbx only about 30-40F, and adjust the size according to the efficacy of your chosen cooler and intended placement (i.e. a stacked-plate is more efficient than a fin and tube; a dedicated fan reduces the size needed; a cooler placed in the front grille opening can be smaller than one used in a rear pillar duct; you would want one much larger if you are hanging it somewhere in the undercarriage where airflow is poor, like over the trans or between frame rails, etc ) In my opinion the HX shown is too large for any location except one with very poor airflow, if it were being used with a wbx.

The HX's bluebus is talking about are probably the stacked-plate units made proudly in Canada by Long's Enterprises, whose brand would be clearly stamped on the side tabs. They are resold under almost every name in the VW aftermarket parts universe. Bugpack (good) and EMPI (bad!) both sell the exact same units. So does RPW (best price on the sizes I use) and many other vendors not concerned with the VW market. Don't let someone's untreated brand reflex disorder steer you away from buying a good quality part, you're a grownup and if that's who you choose to do business with that's your business, not some internet scold's. EMPI has some parts manufactured, some pretty good, some are crap, but like the other mainline vendors in this market most of their catalog are other manufacturer's parts they blister pack and resell under their brand. It's all very fine to choose your vendors based on their warranty support, but on the other hand when you buy a quality part thru that vendor you will in all likelihood have no need of such support. This is one of those parts where the need for after-sale support is pretty unlikely; I buy and install or resell about 25 to 30 Long's coolers per year, with a 100% success record to date. With that record I wouldn't care who I bought one from if I liked the price.

OK with limited to no knowledge, could that OP's be worked into the coolant system in addition to the radiator.? I'm very serious is the answer is yes and I'm okay with no too. But if its closed circuit couldn't some wizard work it into a coolant system?

My thoughts were to mount as a passive system, syncro gas tank area, for my 2.2 if I ever get around to assembling it. Still need a cam, lifters and a modified oil pump.
