|

The rubber floor mat kit that I purchased from GW over a year ago, still smells
funky like it did out of the box? I have washed them with everything possible
but the rubber itself smells strange. It's not a totally unpleasant smell, just strange.
Has anyone else that has purchased these had the same results in terms of smelliness?
Were you able to change or get rid of the smell of the mats? What did you use
on them? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Can't comment specifically on the GW mats, but leaving them out on a couple hot sunny days should accelerate the off-gassing (that's what your smelling) |

I threw in some ultra cheapy universal mats from Wal Mart a few weeks back - same thing. I left them outside in the sun and wind a few days and its much, much better. You may have had the smell off-gas from the mats into the carpets and seats! _________________ 1972 Porsche 911E

I bought my set from Van-Cafe. They reeked when I first opened the box. After a week or two of sitting out, I finally installed them in the van... no obnoxious rubber odor (and I have sensitive sinuses). _________________ ~Kamz

I bought a set from GoWesty about a year ago and eventually threw them away because I couldn't stand the incredibly strong chemical smell. I tried scrubbing them and airing them in the Sun but they were unbearable... Mine must have come from the same batch as yours. It was so intense a smell that it made me nauseous and I'm sure it killed most of my brain cells.
Cheers,
-Bill

Ditto here. Bought from GW about 6 months ago and they were brutal when new. They still smell a bit, but I'm used to it. I think I'll try the time in the sun though........next July when it comes out. Gotta love Seattle. _________________ '87 Syncro Westy

Mine stinks too - kinda sweet-chemical - tolerable but not pleasant.
I've done the both scrub/wash and sun treatments. Not much change. BUT the stink seems to be slowly subsiding over time.
BTW the mats came with my van.. wouldn't really recommend them to others, bothj due to the smell and due to the fact that they catch dirt, look dirty fast, and don't wipe up easily. _________________ 91 syncro westy w/ 08 suby ej25

Mine were smelly at first, especially on a hot day.
But it has diminished and I can barely smell them now
Buildyourown is right, they are offgassing or outgassing.
Set them outside for a few days to accelerate the process.
