I'm about to embark on replacing my front heater motor and want to take care of the other stuff while I'm there--sound deadening, flap foam, electrical connections, etc.

Having read the posts on shear bolts, I'm convinced that they're an anti-theft device and not there for front impact safety. So I'm ok with replacing them with regular bolts.

What size bolts are they? Looks like 8mm by maybe 15mm?

I want to have everything lined up in advance as this is my driver. Other things to have on hand before starting? I can walk to the flaps but rather not.

Yes, I've read a bunch of posts including the stickies...seen Ben's site...but any last minute advice?

They are common 8mm x 1.25 pitch. You can use regular hex head bolts or if you want to add some deterence, you could use allen head bolts instead.

Or you can just grind the 'safety bolts' down to 13mm size like I did. Took me all of 5 minutes.

If I just get new bolts, how long should they be?

You can use the old bolt as a reference for the length. I'd say 25 to 30mm is plenty.

25 mm is about 1 inch of threads. I don't believe the bolts are longer than 1 inch. There is room for a longer bolt and you could get away with a shorter one since you are only bolting through three layers of stamped sheet metal. If you have the shear bolt out, use it as a reference for the length of the thread.
