Talked to my gf she seems interested, we would drive to davenport friday night and sleep, then drive to big sur. We probably won't stop in santa cruz for breakfast as we aren't the biggest breakfast people and instead stop for lunch somewhere on the way and meet up at 12.

I have a 2wd

Mario, maybe Santa will bring some boot protectors to you....

Santa better bring something else, both of my syncros already have them. Laughing
It probably is the lift or the boot quality or both that led to the failure.

Hey Y'all,

Sorry I can't make it for a weekend camping trip.

The google maps tag for Plaskett Creek camp is placed on a crowded-looking place that's some kind of school/private compound. Plaskett is the next driveway to the south, on the east side of HWY 1. I'm sure you'd find the camp without my comments. But if you looked at google maps and wondered "why is the campsite is so darn crowded," it's because the campsite is a couple hundred yards south of that place!

I stayed at Plaskett and the facilities are nothing special, but the setting is very nice with lots of trees and space between campsites, which means you can have some privacy if you get a good spot. This was my site at Plaskett Creek:

My trip notes say it was $22 self-pay.

As long as you're driving all the way down there, check out Kirk Creek Campsite, five miles North of Plaskett Creek on HWY 1. Kirk Creek is on the West side of the road, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. (Just a stone's throw from the base of Nacimiento Ferguson road.) Kirk Creek is really scenic, therefore a bit more popular (crowded). And the campsites at Kirk are closer together. Also $22/night. Check it out on your way so you can compare.

Have a good drive!

Kirk creek is a first come-first serve campground and I have yet to be able to score a spot there in the summer. Someone might be able to get one there nowadays.
Nacimiento Ferguson road is almost directly across the road from the campground.
There is a small trail that starts there as well that you can reach Cone Peak trail. It is a zig zag trail that climbs 11 miles to the top of the peak which is one of the highest in the area if someone wants a challenge. http://www.summitpost.org/cone-peak/150519

I did, 2 years ago, begging for a spot at dusk, I was allowed to stay on the side of a curbe between sites because I was self-contained in the westy, no camping tent Laughing

Im so glad this is coming together

Presslab, and Inlet will be camping at Davenport Friday night, Dave is also coming down the coast road from the Bay area.

Presslab and I are meeting at my house at 8, to caravan to Breakfast at Paulas, 3500 Portola Road. Dave and Inlet are also welcome, though may be on a different route to Monterey.

Depart Paula's 9am, drive to Monterey and buy gas, I use the Valero at 1042 Del Monte Avenue (20 cents cheaper than the Chevron on Rio Road in Carmel), then on to Monastery beach to meet Bill and Dave at 10:15am. You can also buy gas in Big Sur, for about $4.50 a gallon.

Then continue down to Los Burros Road for a 12pm departure.

Counting Mario, Blake with Brigitte, Bill, Dave, presslab (maybe with Womanfriend), Inlet and Womanfriend, and me and my Womanfriend, we have 4 syncros, one syncro doka, and two 2wd Vans, plus possibly 3 or 4 female copilots, so maybe 10-11 people and 7 vehicles.. And we are all spending the night somewhere up on the ridge, I defer to Mario and the group to help us choose where.

Plus possibly 3 more vans at Plaskett camp.. It might be fun to visit them on Sunday and have a group bbq/lunch.. dont know if Plaskett has room for that, or if there is a good spot nearby that can hold 7-10 vans.. just thinking out loud.

Bear in mind it gets down into the 40's at night, and temp is forecast to be in the 70s during the day, dress accordingly. Also note there are no facilities, bring your own toilet and food supplies. Forecast is for sun, Los Burros road should be dry and in great shape for a 2wd.

I anticipate probably using the Coast Ridge Road to reach Nacimiento Fergusson and camping near there.. My guess is that we may be on dirt for 2-3 hours before making camp, depending how we break it up with stops along the way.

I also defer to Mario and the group to choose the route. Im pretty sure there will be additional opportunities to sidetrip in Syncros, though I dont know of any specific places and am open to learning new places to explore.

Looking forward
Jonathan

I am heading out as soon as I get this front outer boot swapped and will be down there tonight. If I am not at Los Burros at the meeting time roll out, I will see you guys up on the trail.
The VC boys told me that DLJ and Jon have already dropped by so this means that the vans are already in motion. Cool

I'm planning on bring my Weber grill. Not sure if this counts as fire - it's propane. I sent off a Koni shock for warranty but I picked up a spare at Pick'nPull for $6. Smile We should be arriving at Davenport around 9:30p tonight.

I had a great time, some really good people showed up. Thanks.
Sorry I had to pull out last night and miss the rest of the gathering.
Just another rough day on the coast. Smile

BTW when I got back up to the ridge from camp the wind was really ripping through so that spot was the best place to be.

Jon, the pics are great, as are Blake's. Mario knew of a sheltered place out of the winds he experienced camping on Friday night on the ridgelines. Good deal. Temp was 57℉ in the morning. No fire rules were still in effect (to include charcoal), But Jon's marinaded tri-tip on Ryan's Weber gas grill made us all believers.
Good group
Good size
Ryan and Susie Press drove down from Santa Rosa to be with the likes of us and to show us how to do the trails without no stinking Syncro. (And they did!)

Very nice. Interesting landscape. So when you are going up those mud/gravel one lane roads going around corners, well how often do you meet someone coming at you? Doesn't look like much room.

Gosh its nice to see so many Vanagons together!

We only met a couple motorcycles while moving. If you don't go too fast a head-on is not likely, we were doing 15 mph most of the way, slower around turns.
