Hello-

I understand that Porsche 356 cases use a 'through bolt' to help hold the case together.

Is it possible to modify a 36HP case to use a through bolt?

If so, what's the benefit?

Thanks,

Paul

you can tighten the case better without pulling the bolt out (torque should be right)

the mechanical threatment in the area of the bolt in the case is hard... so doing it like porsche is the better way... i missed it on my engine, will do it on my next....

no problem in doing it on a 36hp case or 30hp case...

Hi
I was just wondering if though bolting the case can limit the maximum amount the case may be bored for larger cylinders / interfere with the cylinder spigot on larger bores??

Cheers Frank

Any body have a picture of this? are you talking about the 6 studs that clamp the case around the main bearings? this sound like a good idea to me.

How close in length are they to the Type 4 bolts. That could be a source.
I have a couple coffee cans full, where I have parted out engines.

LN Engineering sells thru bolt kits for $25.

Stoddard has the bolts as well as the o-rings, washers, and nuts.

Here are a few pics of a Pre-A case with thru bolts.

I am in the middle of my project and may consider this. It appears in the pictures that the two middle studs are converted to Thru bolts not all 6. Is this the case?
If so in my thinking it seems that the middle studs would have less engine stress than the outer studs. from the engine into the flywheel and from the engine pulley to the generator and fan.

Whats the idea behind just the two center studs?

Hello-

Yes, I was just thinking of that. Don't forget the o-rings. Wink

I'll get some pics of my case next time I go to Ollies. They welded up the area under the cooler mount and machined a flat surface for it to seal against.

The bottom bolt was done like a 356.

Guess it's time to get it together but we're still brain farting how to make roller tip cam followers work

I'm going to talk to a machinist this Friday about installing a through (thru?) bolts. My big concern is that they seem to pierce the oil galleries. Shocked If I want to do this, how do I make sure 1) i don't block the oil passages, and 2) I don't shoot oil out of the sides of my engine?

BTW, here's a pic of a dual port case.

Has anyone seen a comparable picture of a 36HP case?

Cheers,

Paul

Hello Paul,
First of all, do you really think you need this modification?
Think about the horsepower your little engine will make.
When do you want to drive your little "Vintage" performance engine.
It's really great to have these little "tricks" incorporated into your engine build,
is it really worth the time searching and posting; while the parts sit waiting for the latest "Trend".
I think we have been talking for 5 years+. Maybe it's time to get something together.
Forgive for me for being an A-hole. Maybe you already have an 100 plus horsepower two piece engine. Think about it.
Best Regards,
Al

Thanks for the response.

Regarding the long period of time I've been collecting parts, much of that has to do with unforeseen financial issues. Rolling Eyes
