|
|
My 63 ragtop that I just bought was hit in the back. There is a small dent in the rear apron, but my biggest concern is underneath. The metal in the body behind the rear bumper mounts is rusted. Now my question is; should I straighten the rear apron, and put in 2 new pieces of metal behind the bumper mounts, or cut an entire section off the back of a donor car, metal and rear apron and weld it on as one piece. Any other ideas? thanks |

O.K so replace everything with German metal, but would it be better to
just replace the rusted metal under the rear bumper mounts, and repair the apron, or replace it all asone piece?

Finding a decent rear clip was a PITA. So I decided to buy one repop replacement panel to see how bad it was going to be.
I was actually surprised how good it turned out and ended up doing both sides.
I kept the original apron though.

As I said, I used the original, it was in decent shape, just had it media blasted to get as much of the rust and crap out as I could, it got thin in a couple of spots, but easily fixed before welding it back on. _________________ 63 Dee "lux Interior" RIP Lux

Wolfsberg west and CIP, both had the exact same quality panels.
If I was going to do it again, I'd go with Hooky's sheetmetal for sure. _________________ 63 Dee "lux Interior" RIP Lux

update: I've found a decent rear clip off a 1962. I also have the left and right repair panels. So, should I replace the rear apron and bumper mount areas as one unit, or as a 3 piece operation? I'd really like to hear from you if you've done this. I'm just learning to weld to the one piece unit would have to be done by someone else. Also, my rear apron need of attention.
Thanks Geoff _________________ 1963 Ragtop |

Guy at the body shop my car is at told me that, from his experience, 80% of after market meal will fit perfectly, the other 20% will need work. |

If you have an entire clip that is decent…I would just do it in one piece….but keep that other rear apron….save it for a rainy day. |
