We took 2 Syncros and headed south for a Thanksgiving trip to Baja. We cooked an 18 lb turkey with BBQ we carried along. On the Sea of Cortez we kayaked a little and fished a little too. We took the bad road south past Gonzaga and on to Bahia de Los Angeles. Winds kept us in camp a lot and 1 of the nights we had a major blow with sand everywhere by morning. The last night was at a Pacific side campo with hot showers and the next morning frost was on the tent and the ground. Great trip, amazing sunrises and sunsets. Below is a sunrise at Bahia de Los Angeles, a place of many wonders.

Sweet! Beautiful sunset. My last trip to Baja my wife and I pulled the westy up on a beach just north of Bay of L.A. and camped for 5 days. It was January and we had the whole place to ourselves the whole time. Great spot. _________________ 83 1/2 Westy waterboxer

Hey Mark.
That's a beauty of a sunrise eh?
Seriously, nice. Thanks for sharing.
One of these days I'll actually make it that far south. That would be killing.

Yes it is 2wd to get there and most places around there too. We drove about 800 miles on the Mexican side of the border this trip, less than 100 of it dirt. Most of that dirt is being replaced by a modern highway through what was once a route of the Baja 1000 south of San Felipe and Gonzaga Bay. The only time we needed 4wd was the last 50 feet when we wished to camp on sand right at the water line in a certain spot.
While we were camped there a few more rigs pulled in along the shore down the beach and most were 2wd including some small RVs.
On the drive home we noticed that much of the light gringo traffic heading south were SUVs and RVs with British Columbia plates as well as Wash and OR, with a smattering of the rest of the Western States.
Tourism is way down for the last few years, due to the bad press on Mexico and I assume the down economy. Lots of people told us all before we left that we were crazy to go. It was my 5th trip down this year. I have gone more than 100 times in the last 20 years.

Thanks for posting the pics and for reminding people of the beauty of Mexico (and that the Baja is not any more dangerous than most other places we drive on vacation).
It is a lovely country with nice people -- hopefully someday peace and order can be restored to those areas that are in the grip of the drug violence. Meanwhile, we still have the Baja. |

No Way! Everyone will be down there in the winter and it will ruin it for the few of us with a sense of adventure that go down there now. |

I am planning to travel from the south Cabo area to California next year (Ferry from Mazatlan) Could you recommend 3-4 spots that are must see and good for camping, kayak etc.? I have a 2WD Westy. Do you know of a book I could get to help me discover Baja'
Thanks Mark

Those are seagulls mostly. I did not realize it yet at the photo time but a giant squid had washed up right there during the night and all the birds came to pick at it. The noise of the birds bickering about it woke us just in time to see the fabulous sky. If anyone cares to see more photos here are some taken by another member of our party.
