I consider myself an intelligent guy, and I am well-known for my skills in creating things with my hands, but.....
this thread is absolutely mind blowing technically. And the welds and fab are true art. Please keep up the fine work, and keep us posted.

Sorry for the delay but i have been working like a rented mule. And I own the damn company.
Here are some pics of my bus. I would really like to mount the 3.6 in the rear but measuring from the back of the engine to the center of the axles on the tranny it looks like i will have to move the rear wheels up towards the front at least 5 inches. I know other guys have done similar conversions. Is the 3.6 engine and automatic i have that much larger than a 3.2 engine, Or wait, is their something diabolical i have completely overlooked.
What is the best time to call you at the number you sent me.
I am in and out on holidays for the next while as my wife cannot understand three weeks in the shop working on this conversion is a holiday.

Hey Al,
Your panel looks excellent!
No bodywork, just work on the "Porsche performance modified transporter" part.
No worries on the busy part, my boss is a tyrant (also self employed) so I understand.
Best time to call is after 4pm weekdays, and hit or miss on the weekends.
This sunday I am working on my d.c. but am sandblasting at my shop so try in the morning 9am or so.(or sat. after 9am)

Here are some shots of the shortened and re-splined drive shaft.
Not so interesting but a crucial part in the build to fool the 3.2 that it is still in the back of a porsche 911 and not in the middle of a truck facing the wrong way.
Bit too long.
That should work.

O.K, a little something to show.
I am cleaning up the chassis before I re-install the drivetrain to go back to Seth's shop for more of the fancy stuff.
I sand blasted the new and old engine bays and then used Pickelex 20 on the bare metal (also stripped the bed by hand and am using the same procedure for paint except it will get a final coat of bedliner finish in grey) next is the MasterSeries silver primer (see photos) and finally the MasterSeries grey paint.
The red looking stuff is West system epoxy mixed with high density filler, to fill and strengthen some of the deeper rust pits.
The truck came from the Seattle area and was completely undercoated, prolly as soon as it hit the dealer, good and bad, as the basic frame is clean underneath, its just getting down to the underneath that is bad.
I took a tip from a thread on Pelican Parts forum about using the harbour freight multi-tool to knock (vibrate) off most of the offending matter.
While I am not a fan of crappy tools (I actually own a air powered Fein multi tool that the H.F. tool copies) sometimes you need crap to battle crap. It worked great.
Once the grey paint is applied my next task is to install the modified fuel cell and begin running fill and fuel lines.
The engine also needs new fuel supply and return lines as the stock mid- 80's rubber lines are prone to unplanned external combustion events- just like its VW brother.

just found this thread- awesome build- I love the vw-944-swap-ability, used 944 stuff on my bus- using it on the baja, however you've taken it to a whole new level- I guess it'll be time to change it up when my motor croaks

Thanks all for the comments, and Seth, it is getting a little closer to returning for some of your "fab magic"(what you have cooking up can only make us wonder and quake in fear and/or anticipation).
I have finally shot the MasterSeries grey and it ready for some re-assembly and systems install.
The level of finish remains at the daily driver shop truck status so it may be a bit industrial for some used to the show car attention to detail, pardon the paint runs.
It is not the paints problem, as it layed down well with a little thinner to help it flow through the cheep H.F gun which started loosing parts in the mist of battle, but I could only at times pull the trigger and guess the aim and overlap(only those who have dared to shuffle along on their back on a board with tiny wheels while firing a toxic plume onto a steel object five inches from their face know of what I speak).
So glad that is done.

I just found this post and... well, I'm shocked... loss of words.
The skills, fabrication, engineering, ideas that are being put to work on this truck amaze me. This is a truly a one-off build. Unique in many ways. I have never seen welds so clean!
Major Kudos, this build is bad ass... keep up posting some more updates.

The paint job looks better on the interwebs than in person but it as detailed as I wanted to go.
Here is a photo I missed on my last post, it shows the 944 torsion end caps which in a 944 help bolt in the complete rear suspension but in this case it re-enforces the frame and body connection a little.

here are some photos of the fuel system which I need to complete before I re-install the drivetrain and get the d.c. back to the fabricator to work on the dry sump tank/exhaust/hydraulic clutch/ ect......
this is a R.C.I. fuel cell modified by Seth a while back to fit over the torque tube tunnel, went from 15 gallons to 13.
Seth fabbed a new 2" fill to line up with the fuel door and I used the stock fuel cell cap to run a fill vent to the new cap. the new cap is non-venting(which is great as I dislike the stock V.W. cap which vents fuel out every time you turn left). The new vent is the red thing at the top of the shot and it is a fancy two way valve which under super low pressure allows air in to replace the fuel but not constantly open to let vapors escape or liquid fuel out but will vent under higher pressure if the tank goes positive (parked in hot sun).
Porsche fuel pump which along with a Canton filter will mount on a aluminum bracket
A little bit of bling in the form of a Aero fuel cap from B.A.T. in florida, made in Britain it is nicely crafted.
Next up is throttle cable mount on back of engine since it is difficult to access once engine is installed.

I finished the new engine mounted throttle bracket and tested the made to order throttle cable from Pegasus racing, works well. On to drivetrain install.
First up get the truck in the air.
Next slide on over 480# of engine (moving dolly under)
Up and in (about two hours working alone going slow)
Shortened torque tube.
