It seems to me that the starter original 1989 VWunder does not turn fast enough.

Sounds like the starter is cranking though, so your problem is something else, like a corroded ground at the tranny for example.
If everything else is ok, your starter doesn't need to spin fast to start that subaru motor instantly. Especially in vegas, where "cold" means 45 degrees. |

Before purchasing a starter , check and clean (down to bare metal) the ground strap in the battery box, even better swap it out with 2/0 AWG cable. As you know electricty travels on the outside surface of the wire, if the braided ground is tarnashed your losing voltage.
Do the same to the transmission ground.
A lower weight motor oil will allow engine RPM to be higher during startup.
From my personal experiance the optima batteries are JUNK, look into an Odessey.
Good luck

I would like to say thank you to all who responded. It was a great help.
After checking grounds, straps and all the paraphernalia connected to the start circuit, I shall have to deliberate whether I should go with the TDI/Karl's adapter combination or the Porsche starter.
On this subject, it was mentioned that a Porsche starter from a 911/930, 1972-1989 part No. SR68.
I found a part No. SR 68 ....X, does the X makes a difference ?
As it was mentioned in this very same thread that Optima batteries "are junk" I'll say this > Yes ... and .......No.
I have a 5 years old Optima on the Austin that due to the climatic conditions in this desert I drive very sparingly and that sits for weeks perhaps months at a time and -that- Optima has never failed to start that 6 cylinder running either 50W or 60W oil.
However, the 1 year old same identical Optima battery fails to start the puny 2.2 4cyl. in the van running 20W50.
Lastly, someone mentioned that a group 48 "would/could/might" fit.
I would appreciate details on this. Would it fit WITHOUT modifications ?
The Odyssey (for a price) has great specs in a group 48.
Thank you very much again. _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

Thanks for the link syncro.
It would seem that in this thread, several posts mention "having" a Group 48, but no one specifically say anything about installation/modification, grinding, cutting.
The answer that came closest to answering my question being:
"So it sits too high in the box its not level with the floor around the seat BUT we do have 1/4" clearance under the swivel seat base
++ I now lots o reserve at 945CCA"
Whether it matters or not, I do not have swivel seats. Though I do not really see how the swivel seats really matter as my concern is the lid, not the seats. As a detail, I am amazed that the learned and esteemed "engineers" at VW would make this lid out if metal, I presume out of pure greed to save a few pfennig instead of making it out of non conductive material. I had once a 17 mm wrench drop right onto both posts of a battery, pretty soon I had two 17mm wrenches though pretty short wrenches _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

No mods on mine to fit. I have a 7 seater so there isn't a swivel seat. I did put sound deadener on the back side of the lid just in case since the battery is kind of close. I only have experience with the wally world version though. |
