OK now I am confused. Everyone is saying 3/4 and now you say 7/8!
What is the correct size. The Amazon link does sell the same hose in 3/4 by the way. I really like the silicone idea though.

This is what I have, not sure about others though.
THERMOPOL silicone heater hose 3/4" (19.05mm)
Its a cool Blue Color on the outside and just as cool of a Red color on the inside. Puts some bling in the engine compartment  |

Edit: Got out the tape measure and checked today and it definitely takes 3/4" or 19mm hose. Don't know why I was thinking 7/8" hose. Wonder what vehicle actually needed that 7/8" hose. Lost to time at this point. 
As far as using just regular heater hose, it will typically far outlast the crappy hose that VW used originally. Those original hoses started collapsing about the time the vans first pulled off the lot into traffic and had rotted through within a year or two. Regular heater hose will get pretty hard and needs to be replaced every few years, while the silicone stuff seems to have a pretty long life.

I got this hose from Brickwerks as a replacement.

I would have liked black but they were out of stock when the engine was out.
I am sure the collapsing of these pipes causes the intermittent belching out of smoke that a number of people including me have experienced. Not any more though. My thoughts are that they collapse allowing pressure to build, then belches through a lot of oily vapour when the pressure opens up the pipe. Just speculation though.

I doubt seriously if he still has the flimsy original OEM hose. Yes I find it funny (or maybe just sad) when people make such claims as the part(s) in question may well have been replaced multiple times by PO's. |

Aww, c'mon why you gotta inject seriousness into the joke? 
But, to add my experience to the thread, I bought my van 8 years ago and haven't changed the hose until just recently, no idea how long it was running before then. It was spongy but functioning fine, changed it in the interest of preventative maintenance. |

| On the issue with 3/4 or 7/8...I have just fixed the breather hose in my 88 Westy...the heating pipe on the air intake side fits 7/8 and the air breather tower fits 3/4. I bought an Earl's 3/4 tube (for oil purpose) and could not jam the heating pipe into the hose. I didn't want to risk ruining an old plastic piece, so I slip a 1" long 3/4 piece on the air breather tower (the O.D. of the Earl's 3/4 tube is about 1") and used an ~ 1" I.D. silicone hose to hook up the tower and heating pipe. It fixed the leak... |

Wouldn't you know my rough and high idle was due to a collapsed breather hose.
I picked up an oil breather hose for a Thing at a local vw parts store that mostly has air cooled parts. The Thing hose is the correct material and you get about 20" worth of hose for $13, enough for you and a friend.
