Hi: I've got a leak from the automatic transmission in my '88 Westfalia.
It seems to originate from a round plate mounted on the transmission above the oil pan. Bentley shows 2 different views but no name so I can order a new seal. See page 37.17 or figure 3 on page 38.3. Anyone with a link on what to expect when I remove the plate(exploded view). Thanks for your help.

2nd gear brake band piston seal. you have to take the transmission apart to replace it. unless you can hold the 2nd gear brake band in place to prevent it from moving when you remove the piston.

incorrect, you can do it while in the vehicle and you can use a few methods to deal with the 2nd gear band.
there's a few threads with the back & forth on this very topic..

good luck and I found the O-rings at a trucking repair centers hydraulic shop. (VW wanted $20ea for this O-ring) truck shop wanted $.84ea
and size wasn't exact, but the next size down stretched/fit fine.

Are you sure it's not the govenor seal? does it look like a cup sticking out the side with a clip? That's an easy one to replace in the van.
