Hi there,
I'm looking at getting a Thing and was wondering if there is any thing I should look for or be aware of?
I know the normal things to look at when looking at a VW but is there anything that is common to a Thing.

Rust, the rear brake drums can be pricey, ball joints cost less now but used to be $. You want the windshield frame to be in good shape. Have a look at The Thing Shop and Things Unlimited websites, browse around and look at prices so you know what your getting into a lot of parts are standard bug but some are Thing only and can get expensive.

Also keep in mind that Thing parts are alot harder to find than bus parts so make sure it is as complete as possible. The parts usuallly are about twice the cost of bus parts when you can find them.

Check the common rust spots particular to Things:

1) Rocker panels (inner rockers are often bad)
2) Pan (especially by the battery, under the rear passenger-side seat)
3) Rear inner body, in front of the wheel wells (flip down the back seats to look there)
4) Bottom corners where fenders meet the body
5) Windshield frame, radio antenna mount, underside of doors, around the fuel cap

If it comes with a soft top and soft windows, check to see if they're original or aftermarket. The lower portions of original window frames are almost always rusty/rotten, but you usually can't see this by just looking at them. Replacements cost $$$, but costs can be deferred by sending in a good frame. Original soft top frames will probably be slightly bowed upwards just above the central door posts. This can be straightened, but if the front piece is rusty, then the whole frame should be replaced.

Underneath, most of what you'd look for would be typical VW stuff.

Check to see if the windshield wipers work - the motor is extremely expensive to replace.

Check the exhaust system - the '73 is different than the '74 because of the heater types used in each model year. Check to see if you have a heater, and if it works.

Anything else I'm missing?
