I am facing a wiring disaster. Just bought the vehicle and I'm told by a mechanic that it needs a new wiring harness. I think I can do it myself. I'm pretty intelligent. Any good advice (general) + where should I find the harness? I'm looking at rockymountain motorworks (motorworks.com)
Please help. |

I would suggest Wolfsburg West...that is where I got mine for my '58 Single cab and they should still have some for the newer ones too.
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/wolfsburg/electrical/bus_electrical/wire_harness.htm
is the whole link to that page at least.
Is not too hard, took me a day to do mine...though I have the misfortune to fix someones Mickey Mouse Job...went to an 8 fuse box from the 6 fuse box and who knows what was done.
The diagrams show very well how things go...but note where you pulled the harness out from in the first place so you can get things to go back the same way.

There are at least twice as many wires on a 68 bus as there are on an early model and I think that I could do alot of repair for the 200+ cost of a new harness.... Unless of course it is smoked/burnt together.... If it is just a matter of some systems not working or a butcher job from stereo happy previous owner then it could be dealt with... I would try to find a 68-70 bus in a bone yard and cut out a large of chunk of the harness as I could and use the same color wiring to replace damaged/ missing or incomplete circuits. A good color wiring diagram is in the Factory (Bently I think) manuals or on line somewhere..., a test light a VOM and some connectors, shrink tubing and maybe a bit of soldering... I have fixed some real messes without having to go to the extreme hassle of the whole harness, It's a bitch the later they get.... |
