We'll the motor is now built to longblock status. The only thing needing to be done is setting the valve train geometry and setting the endplay. Good time was had by all, everyone got to get their hands dirty, drink a few, have a cool tech session, and meet some new folks. Thanks to everyone who came out and John at foreign unlimited for all of his help for me and others. I will be building a 1776 singleport motor in about a month for my 67westy info coming later _________________ Zombie

Glad things worked out good for you.
maybe this is something you can orginize once a year just for the fun of it.
wish i had more free time, that would have been cool to stop by.
so how long did it last? _________________ Muffler Mike

We were there for about eight hours, i overlooked a couple of things but because others were there it didnt get missed, we had a lot of good laughs and talked alot of tech and expieriences with parts and suppliers. The worst part was my friends dumb ass dog, we was all over us, but after a couple of beers the dog was passed out _________________ Zombie

Glad to hear it was a success! So about how many people showed up? Can you do the valvetrain geometry and endplay yourself? Both jobs are tedious but absolutely necessary to get right. When do you think you will have the engine finished, installed and fired up?
1776 SP? I built one last year! What are your plans for parts on that engine? |

There was four people that showed up, a67vdub and icyballer from the forums, and two other friends. I've never done valve train geometry, something i cant do on my own, and im sure my ratio rockers will have to be taken apart and properly shimmed. I want the valve train to be right on and will not leave anything to question. Im trying to get someone to help me with this, any takers??? If anyone is intrested in seeing how to break in a motor post, i will get something together if their is enough intrest. I want the motor in my car with in three weeks at the latest. As for the 1776 single port motor, i already have all the parts for it and its actually parts that i was going to use for my 1914 originally or parts ive had laying around. The crank i have for it is a crank that when i showed to Jose at dpr laughed at it because he said it would break within the a week of putting it in a 1914. Its a cast empavi c/w crank (ive learned alot about quality and parts since i bought that crank) drp balanced rods my good friend rubyred61 gave me brand new because he built a stroker, a scat c20 with cam gear brand new in box i got from volksguy69 that i traded a muffler for, a set of single ports i bought off of this website for $20, i took then to DRD and they said they looked brank new, but i had them completely rebuild them with manley valves, hp springs, and three angle valve job(very nice heads). I already had all new bearings ,a case , cylinders and pistons, new pushrods and tubes from scat laying, and everything else i need for it. Its a semi stf (sweep the floor) engine. _________________ Zombie

Its a sweet looking crank, Jose at DPR was telling me the history of those cranks-it wasnt good. I had bought the crank about a year and ahalf ago from my mechanic, im just glad i didn't put it in my 1914. It will make a good crank for my bus motor. So the 76 crank your using is an empavi? Hey i really wanted that 78crank you were sellin. Here is some pics of my motor:

Don't forget the bypass plugs.
Also i'd go with AN fitting on the full flow setup over the barbed ends. No sense trying to save a few dollars there. _________________ Glenn

I built my 1776 SP abouty 1 1/2 yrs ago and ran it last summer before discovering an oil leak coming out from under the #3 cylinder. Engine is out now for sealing up the cylinders. Oil cooler seems not to be the culprit. Has a fresh line-bored case, forged CW 8-doweled crank, lightened flywheel, Engle 100 cam, HD rocker shafts and pushrods, 7.8:1 CR, ported heads (myself), Kadrons, factory doghouse shroud with full flaps and thermostat, and 1 3/8" header. Ran strong in my '69 Beetle but never ran it hard or at drags. Was primarily a highway cruiser engine from parts lying around. |

Your 1914 engine looks real impressive; hope it goes as well as it looks when done. |

Thanks for the learning session, auslander, I had a good time. When are you planning on setting the valve train geometry? I'd like to check it out and see the break-in, if I'm available at the time. I have to work both days this weekend (yuck), but I might be able to adjust the time I have to be there.
Thanks again!

Hey 65 just your luck- i have to tear my motor down come to find out my lifter bores are supertight so i will be having the case machined and since the motor is going to be apart im going to have my cylinders cut to boost the compression as well, i did the endplay this weekend and thought about the lifters and seeked some advise about them and now its coming apart Anybody know how to get the spiral locks out _________________ Zombie

I usually use a small screwdriver and a small dental pick.... but if you want to get fancy, you could go to www.jegs.com and get yourself the "right"tool.. Are you from the SF bay area? I am looking for other "Dubbers" in my area... |

ericTheNorse-
I was thinking North Bay, too!
Here in Santa Cruz, I just bought a house in Beach Flats.
Literally where the Ghetto Meets the Sea!
Always looking to have motor building parties.
Was going to host one soon...
I've got the "sweep the floor" heater beater 1776 and dynamically balanced 121/125 44 Weber 1914 coming together...
The type 4 contingent will also be representing here.
