|
|
Hey guys, these pictures are from my 74 standard which I believe has a rebuilt engine in it with a case from a '75 beetle. I've been reading up on the cooling system and the importance of the bellows thermostat (which as I understand are not produced anymore and fetch high prices). Anyway I looked under my right cooling tin sled today between the push rod tubes and do not see one...I am assuming I am looking in the right spot?...thanks
here are some photos:

Is this where the thermostat bracket mounts to the case...in the middle???

Looks like it's missing.

BTW... you should come to the DasVolks meeting this Wednesday in Farmingdale.
Also you should reduce the size of those pictures to help the topic load faster. _________________ Glenn

Thanks Glenn. So I guess all I really need to get is the thermostat bellows, the thermostat bracket, and then the rod that connects from the top of the bellows to the flap linkage on the fan shroud right? Is it possible to see if the flaps on my fan shroud are there and intact with the engine still in the car? I am hoping the PO didn't remove those as well.
From what I can tell, this would be the correct set up for my car?

If the thermostat had failed the bellows would be fully expanded correct?
And Glenn, does Das Volks meet once every month? I have to work this Wednesday night, but I hope to come to one soon. |

Have a look at the bottom of the fan shroud where the cylinder tins overlap. Just above this joint, there should be 2 holes on each side for some M6 shroud screws. If the screws are there, the flaps are there. If there are just open holes, you've got no flaps either.
Finding these screws may be a bit difficult, they are hidden by the intake manifold. You may have to feel for them.
Here is a pic showing the right side flaps in the shroud. Note this is the view from the front side of the engine where you can't see with the engine installed.
Here is a complete thermostat kit:

Yeah mine is missing too. I think people remove or or neglect to replace them in hot climates - stupid thing really, cause they cost a lot for what they are. |

Hey thanks for all the help and great photo references guys...it's really helping me to understand how this whole system works. Unfortunately, I stuck my hand behind the fan shroud today to find that the holes are empty, meaning the flap assembly is not there. I guess in the grand scheme of things it's not all that bad. I just had one more question. I've been trying to determine if my car has the rear air deflector tins, but have been unable to find a picture of them installed. On Rob and Dave's site, they said they are under the rear pulley?
Here they are on Cip1:

Here's a pic of the left one installed.
It is the part with the hole in it, directly below the exhaust port. The two shiny screws hold it in place.
This one shows the right one:
Held in place by the same shiny shroud screws. _________________

Here are my two, left and right:
Seem to be slightly different from Bruces, especially the right one. |

That is what I suspect, but not sure. Others will surely know. |

I believe the tins are different because the geometry of the engine is not mirror-like. The #1/#2 cylinder head is more rearward than the #3/#4 cylinder head. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. There ia an air scoop that picks up warm air from off the heads and ducts it up through the rear tin where it is connected by a flexable hose to the oil bath air cleaner at the carb pre-heat flap.
Some are on the right, some are on the left. I have a 1970 singleport, mine is on the right. |
