|
|
I finally got all the bugs worked out of my Rostra cruise install on my 1987 Syncro. One of the nice features is the unit provides a wire that goes to ground when the cruise is engaged so that you can lead it to an indicator light that always has 12+ running to it (kind of like the old Bug warning lights).
Anyone have any idea how I could use the vacant LED spot next to the OXS LED in the cluster? Any idea if I could get a custom screen made like they do for the conversions for the check engine light?
Another thing I thought of doing was using the front diff lock light as an indicator but that might confuse some people. _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

There is a guy in the classifieds that could probably make one up for you easily. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=557972 |

Thanks--exactly what I was looking for.
Any ideas on the wiring/bulb, etc.? _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

The simplest would be to just wire into the OXS circuit. There is no actual LED or foil wiring to the blank spot next to the OXS. The little colored "LED" there is really just a dummy. _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

2 issues--I really don't want a red light for this as it generally means a problem. Would like to go with a green or blue. Also I ordered a new insert that includes the OXS.
Can I knock out the dummy and put an LED in its place? _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

Finished product. 3.0 volt 5mm green LED, 470 ohm resistor. Panel insert from Klauswesty (outstanding, by the way!). Maybe I should have gone with a dimmer led. I will have to see how it is at night but I don't relish tearing it all apart again. I figure those foil connections only have so many disassemblies in them before something goes wrong.

Nice job.
Try a 1,000 ohm resistor instead of the 470 ohm. This will reduce the current by half thereby making the LED half the luminous intensity. This will appear to be about 2/3rds as bright. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

The resistor is kind of a PITA to get to but I can easily get to the line that feeds it. If I keep the existing 470 ohm resistor what ohm resistor should I use--another 470 or a 1000? _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

If you add another 470 ohm inline it will be like having one 940 ohm resistor. You could even add more 470 ohm resistors inline (in series) to lower it more. I'm guessing you bought a 5 pack of resistors at Radio Shack or something. _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25

Exactly what I did. I will add them one by one until I find a brightness I like. _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

Added 2 more resistors and dimmed it out a bit. Turn signal used for comparison:

Does anyone know if WestyKlaus or 1971BugGuy are still able to make custom LED panel inserts? I'm installing the GW CRUISE CONTROL kit and would really like to put an LED indicator in the panel.
Thanks for any replies |

I'd be up for a custom insert as well with a check engine light icon next to a cruise control icon on the bottom.

Can anyone tell me if a single LED bulb can simply be powered by a 12 volt power source or is there something required to lower the voltage to the light. I'm hoping to put an LED in a blank space in the warning cluster to indicate cruise control on/off. |
