When we hit the snow, I only ran chains on the rear but my front tires where almost useless due to the tread. On the way down, I installed my extra pair of chains on my front tires which definitely made a difference. Stopping and steering were improved though there was still some skating.
The main issue we rain into besides deep snow was the ice that laid underneath it. I think all of us at one point nearly ran off the road.

Illusion carterzest,, not one break down.
Solid group of people,well prepared.
Maybe if you were there the fire would have been managed differently.

I'm in. I need some patina and brush scratches to loosen me up.
It's just too damn shiny and I haven't even washed it yet My fridge is packed and so is my wallet. This is good. Now, another friend from Pdx may be coming as well. Tram mandate

It was an excellent adventure, with a great bunch of people. looking forward to getting off road again in the future, I'm hooked on this stuff now!

We didn't cover that much terrain, I think those that went up to Hurricane ridge on the second day probably logged a total of just under 200 "trip" miles.
Leaving Loggers Landing around the crack of 11am Sat. morning had us off to a civilized but late start. We headed up FS27 and got within maybe 2 miles of the summit before deep unbroken snow on a solid ice base turned us around. FWIW, it would have taken some serious 4x4 power to get any further.
We then back tracked down FS27 and made our way West on Penny Creek, past Lords Lake, continued West at a lower elevation on various FS Rds until setting up camp for the night. Sunday morning we jumped on FS 2840 and took it up to FS28. This is where we would have ended up had we made the pass the day before. The rest of Sunday morning was spent zig zagging our way West on what I thought were some of the best roads of the trip, the fact that it was new terrain for me might have been part of it.
Our group split when we exited the National Forrest, we were just West of Sequim at that point. Three busses headed further West to check out Hurricane ridge while the others started on their various routes home.
Chains up front: I tried out a set of cables up front, it seemed like they helped on the ice, my front end never skated and they were very easy to get on and off. I almost ran studded fronts but the ones I have are very loud on pavement.
All in all I think the trip was a great success, the next PNW Trail Bash will build on our experiences this time around.
Some things on my mind are: First and foremost, radio communication, CBs will be strongly recommended for every one in attendance. Also, future map books will have drawn-in info on the primary planned route, secondary optional routes and a pre-determined camping location. Longer trips will be broken into stages, with camping locations mapped.

When we stopped at the gas station on 101 after coming out of the mountains, I checked my mileage which totaled 113 from my last fill up at Edmonds before crossing the ferry. My guess is between 70-80 miles in the mountains.
FYI-If anyone is looking to pick up a good back roads map book of the state of Washington, stay away from the 2010 10th edition Delorme Gazetteer. Lots of pretty colors but they no longer label all the roads and a lot of roads that are clearly marked in older books are super hard to locate now because they show as faint = = = instead of _____. I just ordered a 6th edition 2001 Delorme from Half.com which is in the older easier to read style.
Another good choice is Benchmark. The latest version looked pretty good and had all the roads we traveled on labeled clearly.
