My personal experience says this....

People WILL screw with stuff just to do so. Hell, someone stole the gas cap off my Thing sitting in the driveway a while back.

A buddy of mine used to cruise a baja to school all the time(at least when it ran, or he wasn't grounded from driving). It never got screwed with, yet the mazda MX-6 I drove was messed with once or twice...

My brothers buddy had a super vert that someone stole the coil to dizzy wire off of.... or was that my brothers super... either way, it happened, and that wasn't an open engine.

Guess it all depends on who you piss off, or how bored someone walking by is...

Then again other than the gas cap on my Thing, this was all 15 years ago.

Only thing that ever got messed with on my old Fasty is I swear every other week someone would steal the 76 ball from my antenna.. Good thing I had a buddy that worked at 76 and would hook me up.

You might consider what I am helping my son build. A baja looking car.
The main difference is keeping the rear deck lid to keep idiots from messing with the engine. Fiberglass front end, fenders, Tube front and rear bumpers. 3 inch lift kit. The rear deck lid will be cut just about even with the bottom of the fiberglass fenders. Latches under the edges to hold it down. He has a picture of one I think he found on the samba. Blue with a roof rack. I can ask him tonight if he has it bookmarked.

I drive my baja daily.
Park it on a street that kids walk by all the time back and forth from school.
No issues.

I take it to Walmart regularly.
No issues.

I park it at the grocery store.
No issue.

I drove it to a large outdoor, 16 hour metal concert and parked it with 10000000000000000000000 other cars in the middle of big field with people drinking and getting stoned.
No issues.

If someone is gonna screw with you, it doesn't matter what you drive.

I got my Baja when I was 15 (I am now 21). I drove it to school all throughout high school. At first, I was worried about people messing with it, but no one ever has. Whenever I park at Wal-Mart, I usually leave the windows down. To me, people aren't going to go up to a car that stands out because other people would be looking at them because of the car. The only people that have ever messed with my car are my friends. I am kind of hoping someone messes with it now though because I carry around a gun and would love to show it off to a would be thief/vandal. lol

I've got a friend with a 60's corvette who took his coil wire, spliced it, and routed one wire through the cigarette lighter. When he gets out, he pushes the cigarette lighter in to complete the circuit. IF anyone comes and manages to get inside and turn the ignition the engine turns over, but all coil voltage grounds out. No spark, no engine. Just thought it was a clever, hard to notice anti theft device.

i drove my dune buggy for years as my DD and nobody messed with it accept my friends. General public always seems to respect a baja or dune buggy as cool fun. I was parked next to a Lamborghini once and the owner got pissed cause of all the people checking out my buggy and leaning on his lambo. The fact that a baja draws so much attention will make the thieves nervous someone will se them. Besides, most people today dont know a spark plug wire from a vacuum hose anyway.
However, your friends will mess with it all the time. But what are friends for?

had my engine bay open for over 2 years and no one messed with me (i had a turbo motor, so there was no decklid, or apron, lol). i went down town, and left it there for hours, at walmart, also for hours (i worked there, ghetto part of town too), nothing. I once had someone smash out my window to steal a bunch of tools i left inside, but thats it.

I drove my Baja for years in Phoenix and never had anyone touch my engine. They did try to steal it twice, but my shift lock saved my bacon in both cases. It all depends on your locale, and who you hang out with (school buddies!).

My friends have disconnected my coil wire so that i sit there cranking it waiting for it to fire up... but i have done that to them as well....

Take my baja plenty of places, most people give it positive attention.

But the 'ford' emblem off the tailgate of my truck got stolen.

No one has ever messed with my rail and I have left it in the woods to go off hiking or into a cave or something. Its got a key switch but the fact that the metal terminals on the back of the panel are completely exposed means you'd have to have an IQ of 2 to be unable to figure out how to bypass it Laughing

As for being reliable: Um... No... Not so far. Last trip it:
Broke a bead on the front tire (rim seemed to be bent a bit)
Turned into a fireworks device (soliniod screws worked loose causing the battery + to contact the frame in time with the vibration of the engine... The sparks looked cool!)
Stalled and wouldn't start again. Timing was off a bit so I messed with is while I waited for my buddy to catch up in his 4 wheeler (stupid SLOW 4 wheelers... LOL)... That made it worse causing it to loose power and stall going up a hill a few moments later. Eventually I got it set correctly (or more correctly anyway).

Its still missing a bit... I guess a fouled plug or bad wire...

Then again it was a $1500 buggy... I am still working out the kinks.
