|
|
I'm ready to resize the glass from my van sliders to fit into the doka and
I'm hoping that someone with a Tristar or doka with rear sliders will be kind enough to provide measurements of the two glass parts.
I've resized the frames already and will post pictures after I either powdercoat or paint them.
cheers

Thanks Stacy!
And for anybody interested in the original glass from the van sliders, I'm giving it away. PM me. _________________ Ongoing restoration/maintenance of my syncro double cab (and soon Westy):

Stacy would know. He's one glass guy who's made his own sliders before. I could be mistaken but isn't the sliding glass the same as the ones from Westy sliders. That way you only need to make the stationary glass. I have some Doka sliders still uninstalled, in case you need other measurements besides what Stacy has already provided.
As for roll down windows, my bodyman is trying to sort out some ideas. Rolling and down is easily accomplished with readymade hardware designed for street rods and kit cars. The trick is building up the sides to accept guides and weather stripping. This guy added my 4th door in less than a day. He can weld like gangbusters and experienced building custom cars. Plus he's the only guy I know willing to take on such an undertaking. I just have to get enough Bug doors to snag some window channels. Cheaper than having him make from scratch.
Cheers,

Ben, you're right, the stationary glass from my donor van is approx. 12.5 inches so I think that is close enough to the doka stationary measure of 11 and an eighth.
So now I'll just need to have the sliding part remade and make a few new notches for the lock after I've got the glass.
I'm not sure if I'll go with tempered glass or switch it for plexi or lexan as the holes for the slider latch will make it a bit more complicated to have fabbed. Any thoughts on this?
cheers,

Hey Jay,
Any competent glass shop should be able to cut and drill the hole for you. I've seen guys working custom shower doors using diamond tip bits from places like home depot. Those doors are tempered glass. While you're at it, ask the glass shop to make you spares. They're relatively easy to store. Easier to make future repairs if some lowlife breaks the glass or accidental damage. Besides that, as far as the glass shop is concerned, the more pieces you order, the more likely they will give you a better price.
Stacy has done this before and has told me in the past. Maybe it's easier to have him cut and ship the pieces to you, if he is willing. |

So just wondering if anyone completed this and has details. Also i keep seeing different trim colors and wondered what the difference from the silver and black. Cant splurge on getting real ones since the are $375 each! Was hoping to fabricate a pair. Ive seen people discussing it but never completed. Also would love to see a rear slider completed!
Thanks in advance |

I have the glass cut, but need to check the overall length of the frames before cutting them. Can anyone verify that dimension ? Thank you |

fyi for anyone doing this, you can NOT cut or drill tempered glass, it will explode. all factory glass was tempered. _________________ '88Doka JX td

Save yourself relying on someone else's measurements and pop out your stationary window and measure it yourself. They pop out and in easily and will be good practice for when you get your windows built. The edge of the glass should be the same size of the flange of your modified frame.
How are you planning on joining your cut frames back together ? How thick is the glass you've had cut and is it tempered or laminated ? Be sure you look at how the factory windows are sealed together and you copy that. If not sealed properly and open joints not welded will leak water.
I have built a few sets of these before they were available to be bought ,I built my first set about 12 years ago. I did not have one to copy and my glass was equal length ,I now know that the slider is longer than the stationary panel. possibly.
I like other people have a couple sets of Tristar sliders as spares and for possible sale (But not cheap) They only made 2000 Tristars and most of them still have their windows and there are a few sets that wander around for sale.
Good luck
Stacy

Thanks, Stacy, for the reply. I bought the glass from you a few years ago and have yet to do the windows. I remember that you mentioned the size then, I believe ( but, if so, I have lost it.). Perhaps it will be done this winter 😀 |
