With a garage too small to work on the baja in it i have to roll it in the drive way with no windows in my baja making it way too wet to work or drive in the rain. I say GO AWAY RAIN!! With that being said. I am having a leak behind my main pulley i also had a leak from my distributer but was utl the o ring that was supposed to be in there so i put one in fixed it but now focusing on the other leak i have been reading it may be caused by a venting problem but i have both valve covers and the oil filler tube running hose up to around my rear window to a air filter vent area. the air filter vent has what looks like white milk all over it when i look inside it with the filter off. which is water mixed with oil? not chocolate milk but like thicker white milk? anyway ideas on what i have going on? _________________ 63 baja (r.i.p)

the milky stuff in the oil is cause you dont get to drive your car enough. I have the same problem. Its because you need to drive your car hard enough for it to get hot enough to burn out the natural moisture that collects. I've been all short trips lately and the oil never gets hot enough. |

If you are leaking at the pulley, then you do not have enough crankcase ventilation. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I have both valve covers and the oil fill vents all running hose to it's own air filter. You think I should run one to the carbs air filter? _________________ 63 baja (r.i.p)

you dont really want the vents going up cause all the moisture will steam up, go up the vent tube, turn back into water/oil mixture (which is the white stuff) and that runs right back into your motor.
put a 90* fitting on them and point them down.
the pulley will leak when the case is not venting properly.
also with the little air filters at the end of each hose. when the filters get wet or even damp with moisture and oil they wont allow any air to pass (vent) _________________ 70% of what you buy is something to start with.

Do you have any kind of sand seal? I've had mine leak a bit after a year or so, once i replace it it tends to quit. _________________ http://www.wix.com/baja5s/nightrun |

So i need to turn the 90s on my valve covers vents downward, is it still fine that the hoses off the valve covers go up by the window to that filter set up? also the filter on it was covered with oil dirt and water. As for the sand seal im not sure what type of seal is on it. is there anyway to tell besides pulling the pulley off.? And another question im getting alot of exhaust black soot (not sure how to spell it) blowing through where my trimil goes from 4-1 (where the springs are) how can i minimize that? _________________ 63 baja (r.i.p)

X2 what Baja5 said. If that's your car in your avatar I'm sure you have a sand seal. It's probably worn and leaking. The car I bought had the same problem after venting the H$ll out of the motor I pulled the pully and fixed the real problem. _________________ I got a Volkswagen for my wife....Best trade I ever made! |

This is a diagram of how my motor is set up. With the oil leak i cant tell if its coming from the seal or the p.o has alot of rtv around the square i think oil pump under the pulley.. Do you guys think from this that the ventalation should be adequate. And i drained the fluid from the motor and i have a very strong smell of gas ideas anything helps. _________________ 63 baja (r.i.p)

I've had the fuel in the motor problem before and it was a bad fuel pump, but since you have an electronic pump, I have read about too much pressure. When you shut off the pressure leaks through the carb and into the cylinders and past the rings.
Get another opinion (I've never had duals before), but I think an inline regulator at about 3 PSI is what you need.
For the oil I would suspect the pulley seal over the pump, but I'm not looking at it. PO might have been chasing a leak and RTV'd the wrong thing.
I've also heard of the pressure springs sticking for the oil pressure?? |

I still think you have a bad sand seal behind the pully. Just pull it and see. _________________ I got a Volkswagen for my wife....Best trade I ever made! |

Copy thanks for the info guys. So on the shopping list for this weekend i need a inline fuel regulator set about 3 psi, a oil change, and sand seal. How hard is it to change the oil pump gasket while im there anyway changing the seal just in case? the carbs i think are empi i couldnt find any numbers on them but the red covers say empi. the filters themselves on the carbs seem like they are really thin and i found quite a bit of dust inside the carbs any ideas for better filters? again i appreciate all the help i keep trying to find the answers by searching around on here but im definately not good with computers. _________________ 63 baja (r.i.p)
