| My wife and I live in Wichita, Kansas and recently purchased a beautiful 71' Square from San Antonio, Texas. As it turns colder here in the Midwest the heater doesn't seem to be adequate. Is this a common issue? Is there some kind of aftermarket supplemental heater or is it just time to bundle up? Thanks in advance, this site is awesome and we love our Squareback! |

The type 3 heater should burn you out of the car. Have you checked the heating system for proper operation? Check the following:
- hoses from fan shroud to heater boxes
- hoses from heater exchangers to car
- heater exchangers - are they solid and the flaps working?
- control cables and levers - make sure that they're not rusty/broken and operating smoothly
- the two plastic boxes (?) under the rear seat on each side of the car - these can get clogged up with crap and need to be cleaned out sometimes
I'm sure that I'm forgetting something, but if all the above is in working condition you should be getting some wicked heat.

Since it is a mid-west car, how are the rocker panels?? The heat to the front travels through the rockers.
If you really want to heat it up, open the rear outlets, under the rear seat. |

Another hint is to have the heat exchangers ceramic coated to prevent rusting. Then, wrap them with an insulating material (such as fiberglass) and using a mastic to seal the wrap into place. I am from Illinois, and my dad did that with our 1971 Ghia in the 1980s. Winters up there get much colder, and we used to roll the windows down in January because the car got so hot!
