what do you guys think of this for a third brake light-- I like the fact that it includes the turn signals.

I would put it on the back of the rear shelf.

I LIKE that! Just sent them an email asking the width and height and shipping costs to my postal code. Alas I don't have the open shelf in the back of the Riviera but I'm hoping the dimensions will be okay for me. I think I'd get the longer one if no price difference but what do you think the best color combination? I've been thinking a 3rd brake lite. This is nice. Going to look around some shops here. says it comes in a 7 or9 7/8 inch length for the same price. If you find out how thick it is let me know-- I can't imagine it's too bulky since it's made for a motorcycle.

its LED so I don't think it will be bulky. Good idea to check out motorcycle and other specialty shops around here. Will post specifications if I hear back. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

It's made for a motorcycle fender. so I'm thinking outside would be okay--- I want to put mine on the inside shelf-- so looking for a low profile one. not sure of the measurements of it yet.

I used to use a unit meant for motorcycles called a pulsestop. When the brakes were depressed it also flashed both the rear turn signal lights. When someone was tailgaiting you and you tapped the brakes they really took notice. I took the unit off my vanagon because of all the idiots with road rage today! |

The OP is talking about a 3rd brakelight that also does turn signals.
The link you gave does not look like it has this feature.
To the OP, while it's on the spendy side, this looks like a nice addition. Please post pix ("PPP", a new Samba acronym?) and tell us your install adventures.
IMO, you should get the wider of the two models. A 7" light bar is not very much.

$75 is awfully expensive for that setup.
A little extra fab work yourself and you can save a bunch of money by building one with LED strips from these guys: www.oznium.com
Get a 9.5" red strip for $11.49 and two 4.7" orange strips for $6.99 each. Mount them on some angled aluminum and run wires. That should be less than 1/2 the cost. _________________ -------------------------

I got one from JC Whitney for like $10 or $15 bucks. It was about 9" and had the capacity to flash left or right (half). The half flashing kinda seems silly once I had it ready to mount, so I just wired it for breaks only.
Once I put on some really good rear bumpers, my rear defense will be complete.
Do a search for 3rd break light. _________________ 87 Westy, 250k GW 2.4 - 2.0 , 16" wheels |

I've been wanting to get one of these for awhile now:
Left half is one turn, right half is the other, works as turn and brakelight. Hard to argue with safety.

Susie,
Your call, but I personally hate vehicles with flashers somehow integrated in the central braking light. I find that setup way confusing, since my brain associates any bit of red light coming from that area as a braking indication.
Before proceeding, I'd encourage you to read Wikipedia on this topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_lighting#Centre_High_Mount_Stop_Lamp_.28CHMSL.29
And no, I didn't contribute to that article
For my van, I shamelessly copied PDXWesty setup, described here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=285490
Enjoy,
JMR

yeah I like pdx's too-- the link just leads me to JCWhitney's home page-- haven't found the exact light you guys have yet...
The original light I posted about comes in a clear or smoke cover in which you can get amber turn lights...
I know what you're saying about the red turn lights... I will probably go with just a flat red bar for the third light.
KISS
